JCM600 Cab Builds

Minor updates:

Went to Lowe's today for nuts & bolts & such.
Also got some sheets of 5/8" particle board for the baffles.
Cut to size, located the speakers & logo holes, and did a test fit.

Found an old speaker jack for temp sound check with a T-75.
Did a little speaker A-B-C-ing.
V-Types in the center 212 & V30s in the old Katana/faux JCA 212 cab.
Going to try all 3 in the new cabs when done, but still favoring the V-Types for now with this amp.

Ordered all the finishing supplies last night from Tubes & More.
It'll be a few days for that to get here from Arizona.

Cabs are 11" deep - plenty of room for a cast frame speaker.
I had some of those S303 Celestion Marshall Gold speakers with my 6101/6912 - didn't really like them. (made by EV based on the EVM-12L, I'm told)
Might be overkill for a 60w.
I didn't really like my S303 with the 6101 either. I sold em both but I think dude still has one. Still wondered if I should have kept one but not sure what I would use it with and HEAVY!!

As for the cabs, I just scroll to the end of each post to see. All the woodwork stuff to me is like....

Got a few more steps out of the way.
Sanded down the pegs and trimmed the corners so there's a little less work for the big 3/4" router bit.

Just that little 45 cut is about 1/2 the wood that the router removes, and reduces tear out of the plywood layers.

Here's a close up of the round overs after routing.
Still some hand sanding and filler - but probably done with the big tools.

Pic of the full stack with the logo plate mounted in the head shell.
Not exactly a Chippendale armoire, but good enough for tolex.

And a pic of the chassis in the head shell.

That's all for today.
I hosed off the man glitter, and it's time for a steak...
I have never heard the term man glitter for saw dust .. that’s great

Got box 1 of 2 from Tubes & More.

All the small stuff - tolex and grill cloth are in box 2 and I think they got stuck between AZ & PA in that ice storm that hit the lower states.

Had a last-minute design change to black piping and logos, so I rattle can painted the logos in satin black.

While I'm waiting, I did the final sanding and put a coat of black stain on just about everything but the inside of the cabs.
Need to stain the baffles and I like to stain under where any tolex seams may wind up.
With brushing out drips and runs, I just wind up doing the whole outside of the cabs.

Almost forgot a few little details, like the head handle and vent.
Not going to put any kind of back cover on the head, but I had the vent already, so I'm using it up.

Also had another last-minute decision to put a rounded lip on the front bottom to hide the bottom chassis edge.

Mail came already today (Well-Hung strap & Cheezies delivered), but probably won't see the tolex and grill until sometime next week.

Test fit everything while I'm waiting for the tolex and grill to get here:

Bought a right angle set of RCA cables to try to get the reverb tank vertical, but I just didn't make the head shell tall enough.
So, it's going horizontal...

Those darn chassis bolts with the combo flipped upside down are just about where I want the feet, so I used a Forstner bit to make a little notch in the feet.

Handles mounted and speaker jacks installed.
PXL_20230205_173446338.jpgPXL_20230205_173537259.jpg

Put a T-75 in the top cab and a V-30 in the bottom.
Tried either and both together in comparison with the V-Types in the old 212.
PXL_20230205_155059012.jpg

The V-Types are better at getting clean volume on the normal channel.
They all still break up nicely with the clean channel cranked.
The combo of T-75/V-30 sounded best with the gain cranked on the OD channel.
Always a trade off...

Nice work Fitz.
What wire are you using in your speaker cabs?

I've used lamp cord / 2-conductor extension cord and crimp on spade connectors in a bunch of my junk cab builds, but I'm out of the connectors, so I just got two set of these with all the other parts & pieces in my T&M order.

They work great - plug 'n play, so to speak.

Why not put the chassis bolts right through the feet? That is, use the chassis bolts to hold the feet too.

LOL, the thought crossed my mind...
I just bought 6 new chassis bolts because half of the Phillips heads were stripped on the old ones.
I'd need to get 4 more that were about 1/4" longer.
Tried the Forsner bit thing on one and it worked fine, so I just rolled with that.
PXL_20230205_173338335.jpg
I'll have to take the feet off to pull the chassis, but hopefully that's not a daily occurrence.

Tolex day...

Layout the 3 yards of tolex in 18" strips.
PXL_20230211_153300094.jpg

I mark a back edge line and locate where to drop the top on with a white crayon - apply contact cement.
PXL_20230211_165826643.jpg

Wrap around to the splice on the bottom.
Got a splice cut jig - cut through both layers of the overlap and peel back the cut-offs from both sides.
PXL_20230211_171351595.jpg

One by one, cut the corners and trim off the extra.

Repeat again on the cabs...
