To phase or not to phase ....

Sorry I took liberties with Hamlet Act III

I could never get the hang of playing with a phaser. I've tried, got frustrated and stopped, only to go back and try months later and repeat the cycle.

I just tried again and this time I took it off my board.

Maybe I have the wrong phaser, or I am using it wrong, or maybe my playing sucks so bad that modulation just makes it worse.

Any of you use it? Is so how do you use it and what do you play when you do?

I have an Audio Source Lunar Phaser that I got used. It has tons of functionality and maybe that is where I went wrong. Maybe a simple one knob MXR Phase90 would be better for me? Or as I stated above, maybe its how and/or what I play.

Maybe that's just it too, maybe I just don't like it and I'm forcing myself to try and like it.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I had a phaser intermittently on and off my board for many years, always trying to decide if it helped or hurt.

Maybe a year or so ago I decided once and for all it hurt and got rid of it, so there's my vote. Same with flanging BTW.

We will bestow ourselves. Though your phaser may enhance. That show of such an exercise may colour your toneliness. We are oft to blame in this.... 'tis too much proved that with effect pedals and pious action we do sugar o'er The Devil himself....

See, here's what happened. Eddie Van Halen made us all go "damn, phasers sound cool" but none of us are Sir Edward, and as a result none of us sound cool with a phaser. Zakk pulls it off pretty well, but he's maybe the only other one.

I do use phase occasionally. EVH is a good reference point as his use was always tasteful .

To phase or not to phase…

Let purpose be your guide. Are there any songs you do that actually need it?

Oft times, effects such as these are best used subtelely, to add a little “sumthin’ sumthin’”.

Use sparingly. If you can really hear it, you may have gone too far.

I use a Small Stone phaser when I play Spirit of Radio by Rush. (It’s part of what) Works for me.

'evil, a phaser will probably not work for your style. Just saying. It's best use is for trippy lead and it would sound "unthrash" to me. Think Trower. That is probably what you're dealing with.

I have never liked the phaser. I use chorus a little and some flanger. I like subtle Boss Flanger.

I have a Russian made Small-Stone Phaser. It's a fun pedal, but it cuts my volume by a huge percentage. I have one of those old Electro-Harmonix Hotfoot Universal Expression pedals, and it's fun to take the knob off of the Phaser, and attach the cable from the Hotfoot. You get to create some great crazy swirly phase noises. I just need a louder phase shifter pedal.
