So....Watcha Been Eyeballin'?

I see.

It would be interesting the next time you’re around those engineers if you asked them what, if any, adjustments they make to compensate for a room filling up with people after soundcheck.

This is your assignment!

So, I got to see Ghost perform last nigh in Anaheim at the Honda Center (I was there as a special guest) and I spoke with the sound engineer. This information likely won't be applicable to a club where you have your PA speakers very near the height of a person, but they do not alter the EQ settings from the soundcheck levels. The volume levels themselves are seldom - if ever -changed during the event, and this is consistent throughout the tour. Now, there are some sections where a guitarist's volume level will be increased for a solo, and this is done to a pre-determined level, then brought back down again. There is also a separate engineer in charge of the guitar FX, which are all switched on and off from the sound pit.

I was pleased to see Ghost still using the tried and true, wedge shaped floor monitors. There were two dozen of them that I could count during our walk-through of the main stage before the performance.

Now, I've seen bands with PA speakers on the edge of the stage and if you are trying to project that sound through a bunch of bodies on a dancefloor, I can see that being a problem, but with the PA speakers in an elevated position, well above the height of the crowd, (as we always did - ours were 8 feet high) the presence of a crowd should only 'deaden' the room, which really has no impact on anything other than the use of reverb.

But, guys will tell you that this is not possible and that's OK to believe what you want too. I've learned that a lot of guys - even up to the professional level - like to make their art appear more magical than it is, and in some cases, I've witnessed them feeding deliberately inaccurate information (like EVH was known to do) and that circulates , but I'll trust the opinions of guys doing live sound for a worldwide touring band, FWIW anyways...

Thanks for the info and doing the recon work! Interesting stuff.

So, I what want to know now is…in what capacity were you a “special guest”?

My work in the industry has put me in the position to cross paths with a lot of people. I've built positive, professional relationships (and a reputation) that get me invited to all sorts of events, although I seldom post about it, which is likely one reason that I am trusted to this degree.

I won't go into great detail here, but it's well beyond "all access."

Gotcha.

I can respect that.

Sigh...

I'm seriously thinking about grabbing one of these. Almost bought a different model a couple of weeks ago off of Craigslist, but seller backed out.
