A buddy I trust a ton for recommendations, suggested a good Acoustic-Electric to me this morning. So, I ran down to GC on lunch - actually had a very cool sales guy help me out, kinda surprised.
I played a handful of acoustic-electrics:
Luna - never heard of them, but it looked cool, then the crap fret ends almost sliced my fingers open - they should sell a box of bandaids with those.
Ibanez - better than the Luna, but not much
Yamaha - Although it wasn't an electric-acoustic, I really liked this one, but it was not a good looking guitar at all. Left to my own devices, I'd probably hunt down the electric equivalent in a better color and buy it...
Fender - the okay-est of the bunch
Alvarez - a non electric one as I couldn't find the one I was looking for - liked it enough to keep going
And something else I can't remember...
Ran my fingers down the fret ends on about a dozen others and didn't even pick them up as they just sucked.
Sadly, they had no Taylors, or I would have tried one for sure.
but finally played this one:

After not being able to find one, I finally hunted down the sales guy, told him what I was looking for and he said it was the best in that price range they had. And, he'd just seen the Alvarez factory overseas and talked about how cool it was. He couldn't find the guitar either, then went in the back and grabbed one still in the shipping box. He tuned it up, made sure the neck looked straight, played some really, really cool finger-picking stuff on it and it sounded great.
I plunked on it for a bit, with no where near his skill level and my Big Stubby pick til I was satisfied.
20 minutes later I was on my way home with it.
With their 45 day return policy, I figure I have about a month to gel with it or take it back. And, if that happens, I might go after a Yamaha. Or, decide this was a trip down a road I don't need to travel on... who knows...
