DSL is under 1000 BTW.
But still a huge price diff!

The moment @Iron1 has been dying for is almost here ... I'm such a freakin' tease!

Seriously, I finished the shootout between the DSL40CR, JOYO ZoMBie and JOYO VIVO.
While the file is processing, I will tell you how I made sure they were all equal.
Here is what I did.

First, I tried to balance the volume best I could between all three. That was a pain.
Then I decided to make sure the riff sounded exactly the same, meaning same attack, tempo, notes ... EVERYTHING. I decided to record the riff on my looper, no effects, no cab sim, nothing! I made sure the looper didnt affect the tone. It didnt, this is how I sound with no effects going (I need practice!)
I set the gain knobs on all three to high noon and let it rip.
The images of the amps show the actual settings used.
You will notice the JOYO amp volume knobs are pretty damn low.
The guitar I used was my LTD EC-1000FR tuned D# std Bridge active pup EMG 81
Other than my TRIO+, The signal chain was Me -> guitar -> Trio -> Amp -> Mic -> Interface

The DSL was set on Ultra Gain Red channel.

.... Let see if the file is ready to go!

Are you using any type of effects pedal / distortion / boost pedal?
Or are you plugging guitar straight into the amp, no pedals?

Recording on a looper is not the same as the straight in guitar, and I don't think that's a very good test.

If I was comparing 3 amps, guitar straight in no pedals.
Guitar . amp . cabinet . microphone . recorder.
I would not use line out of the amp either. Always mic the cab if I want the better sounding result.

But I am not hearing what I would expect a guitar and a Marshall to sound like.
The looper does not cut it.

The guitar must be into the amp for a good test, so try again.

I think they all sound great, really, but if I had to pick just one I'd go with the DSL.

Now if I were a young guy with limited funds just getting into tube amps I would most definitely grab my two favorite Joyo amp flavors (can't beat the price), along with a decent 2x12 cab, and do as @mcblink said with boost and EQ. Those little amps kick some serious ass!

I never gave any thought to active pickups before but holy crap, that EMG 81 sounds killer.

Also, the more clips I hear of the DSL series amps, the more I'm thinking that one of those would make a decent second Marshall tube amp for me someday. They really seem to cover the whole gain spectrum and do it very well! :dood:

AND YES --- I KNOW--- the JOYO (lol) will probably EXPLODE in a year --- but you can buy a new one every year for 15 YEARS and still not spend 2500.00.................
for the HOME USER that is -- yes -- if your a professional gigging musician by all means GET THE MESA -- if your dicking around nights and weekends at home lets be honest the JOYO is "good enough" (and you can re do the flooring in that bathroom the wifes been bitching about AND get a set a tires-- all for 2500.00 ) ....and likely 1 joyo will actually last 5-10 years anyway

What you are missing is tube power amp distortion.
That is where the real Marshall sound appears.
You need to crank up the DSL and overdrive the power tubes.

Of course it's a lot louder....

But tube power amp distortion is what the solid state amp will never duplicate.
And that's where the tube amp starts to sound good.
With the loudness all dumbed down, you are losing a lot of the actual glorious sound.

Lot of truth there. Tube amps never sound right until you begin to crank them. No matter what settings or fx you use, it kinda comes up empty. But once you hit it around 50%, they take on a new life and sound and get the "Oomph" you want

yep................ but if you cant do that ----due to :

1. not playing LARGE venues
2. not gigging
3. have dogs...cats....birds... (and a personal hearing issue medically that makes VERY LOUD MUSIC stupid painful and makes me want to murder people in horrid and painful ways )
4. MOST venue owners are going SILENT and in ear monitors and all to "house"
I mean this guy says it well....and he HAS A NEW DUAL REC (and hey @Session 5 he is CANADIAN EH!!!) lol

but yes TBTH -- the MESA sounds AWESOME ....... but its just not practical for MOST people

has anyone here with pets ever contemplated how CRANKING YOUR 100 WATT MARSHALL at home .........sounds ? To animals whos hearing is 4 times more sensitive than ours?????

Im guessing not.... just asking for a friend... or 12
No pets in my house, my mums dog used leave the room when I started playing.. he was like im not listening to that poop again… f**** this guy…. And walk out lol

There is SOMEWHAT of a compromise: use an attenuator. Its not gonna let you play at bedroom levels exactly, but it can reduce the sheer bombast while cranking the power tubes. Not overpowered loud but not exactly quiet either

as stated I had 3 of them 2 combos and a head -- seemed fizzy and problematic for the $ --
also had origin 20....just didnt get "on" with them
I did however love the
MGX100 (not pictured Hack blew it up lol )
the Min MG head and the VS8020
marsha marsha marshal.jpg
and presently I really really enjoy my Master lead 12

Yep i get it. Just you were quoting $2500 in a couple places and to be fair the DSL40 is like 1000.
For a grand it is a really good and popular amp. But not for everyone!!
