Video For Gear Snobs:

I completely understand. Music is very personal and holds different meanings in different ways for each of us.

And, as often as I speak glowingly of Eric Johnson, he is not my favorite player! Surprised? I do mention him a lot and there are many things about his style that I find very creative and unique.

The fact is, though, I have no favorite players. I have no favorite players, I have no favorite tone, I have no favorite guitar, no favorite style of music, no favorite song…

I tend to pick and choose what I like here and there.

I think I am able to admire many artists, but likely don't measure up to any of them.

Honestly, noting ever blew my mind more than getting super high and listening to Tool's 'Lateralus' - in particular 'The Grudge'. It's not that long of a song but its absolutely epic if you're in the, how do you say it?, right frame of mind.
Incidentally, much of that album was written while in the right frame of mind lol
Namely " Lateralus" "Parabol/Parabola" and "The Grudge". Same can be said for lots of their albums though for that matter, especially 10,000 Days lol

That left/right panning effect on 'Whole Lotta Love' was wild through those really good Marantz stereo console headphones.

Oh yeah. When that album came out I thought the transition from Parabol to Parabola was the most amazing thing ever - when I was in a 'certain' state of mind at least. It's still kind of exciting to listen to now.

10,000 Days is easily my favorite Tool album, and Tool is easily one of my favorite bands, definitely like top 5. 'Vicarious' is one of those songs that never, ever, gets old for me. Really the whole album, but I have found when it comes to Tool its best to set aside an hour and a half and listen to the entire album.

When Tool first came out to the masses, i was probably 12 or 13. Heard Undertow and thought it was a decent album but i didnt really connect with them. But then came Aenima and that was an entirely different story once I heard Stinkfist: one of the heaviest and weirdest things Id heard up to that point. Became a fan instantly and the next two albums, they just stepped up further and further.

Fear Innoculum is a great album but I'll admit, it took a few listens to love it. I guess I was expecting a lot of the heavy, spacious tracks and they went into a more cerebral and slower sound. I enjoy it now though

I'm in lockstep with you on every point. I was 27 when Undertow came out and thought it was good but nothing to get too excited about. Then, boom, Justin Chancellor was like the secret sauce maybe? Anyway, Aenima was a different story and immediately became one of my favorite records ever. Then they simply outdid themselves with Lateralus and 10,000 Days - both are epic, timeless masterpieces.

I too had an incubation period with Fear Inoculum but now I am just drawn to it and listen to it at least once a week. That record unlocks another of its mysteries with each listen.
