I can’t speak to automotive finishes. Though from what I know. Those finishes are usually baked at high temperatures to cure the finish. Maybe the paint wasn’t cured all the way and the solvents were still flashing off when it was coated. Then those VOCs would be trapped between the finish and the coating. That would cause an adverse reaction.Gibsons are finished in nitro. But these original Silverbursts yellow much more than other colors for some reason. I've seen theories, mostly that its the paint they used, which apparently was some type of automotive finish, offgassing something under the clear nitro that is reacting with the finish in a different way. Always have wondered what the real skinny is though.
