Yarg, since you brought the ABBA theme up (and Chilipepper duly continued), and all jest, joking and ribbing aside, I think it would be interesting to test a long-time theory of mine...
My lifetime of listening to music, and conversing with people who make music and all who listen to it, has prompted me postulate the following: Regardless of what genre you prefer and profess to like, love, listen to or grew up with, from Debussy to Deathcore (and every single point in between)... everybody has at least one song (usually more) that they love, from one or more or all of the following artists: Elton John, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Barbra Streisand, The Bee Gees and of course, ABBA. Whether openly, secretly or as a "guilty pleasure".
I offer myself and a quick sampling of songs I enjoy, as proof of the above: Elton's "Pinball Wizard", Neil's "Cracklin'Rosie", Billy's "Pressure", Barb's "The Way We Were", Messrs Gibb's "Jive Talkin'" and ABBA's "Knowing Me, Knowing You".
Wouldn't it be interesting to see what the community response to the challenge this theory presents is...? BAM!
And also, maybe we should move this discussion to a separate thread lest we derail this one BIG time... RVA, Wav, eSGEe, please feel free to redirect to a new thread/forum if and as, necessary...
Six string, I have a feeling you might have to make provision for the age differences of the members. Some of us are old enough to have been raised on music such as Benny Goodman, Sachmo, Charlie Parker, Mahalia Jackson, Bo Diddly, Louis Armstrong, Les and Mary, Glenn Miller... While others may fit closer to Elvis, The Beatles, Stones, Animals, Kinks, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Mama's n Papa's etc and then come the ones who may have dug bands like you mentioned, along side ABBA, Bay City Rollers, Rod Stewart, The Who, Zep, Kansas, Yes, UFO, Deep Purple, Mountain, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Sabbath, Priest etc right on through folks who like Tom Petty, The Cars, Van Halen, Frampton, Hagar, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison, Tesla, Queensryche, Yngwie, G n R on into eras that cover Grunge, Metal Core, Death Metal, Thrash and so many more. And don't forget all the various bands under Motown's umbrella across all the generations.
SO to answer your question "Wouldn't it be interesting to see what the community response to the challenge this theory presents is...? BAM!"
From the Chili meister. Six String, before you arrived on the TTR scene as a member,, I mentioned several times that my lifetime of musical experiences is like a shotgun shell of bird shot pattern.
I appreciate and love all genre's except Opera, and Rap. Growing up, I didn't just don't go out of my way to listen to some Bubblegum stuff except maybe if you caught me watching Olivia Neutron Bombs in Grease, or the movie Hair, or like when I was 12 and listened to just about any new songs our boy and girl classmates would bring to school on their new 45's. So, for me I think I know Take a Chance on me is Abba. I enjoyed Elton John as much as the next non gay guy does, Queen is still appreciated as were any number of Billy Joel songs, I could not help but hear Streisand songs as she was my dad's favorite. But if you read my list of all the era's, I guess you can figure my selection leans toward variety. So, In the end I am as happy enjoying Classical music as well as Classic Rock, Jazz, And all the Metals combined.
This brings me to Barry White. How's that for a thread derail?
You can ask my Korean Fiancee about Barry. Nuff said.
