Sp8ctre and RVA's Guitar Adventure

There is another issue. The way the string tree was installed, the was not enough downward pressure on the high E string, which made a bad rattle only when played hard and open. I was going to simply reverse it, but it has a screw and a peg. I am doweling the hole now

The dust come in handy again. There is also a toothpick in there

Pretty good is not good enough. This will be done when it is good. If it does not get there, then it wont. Back to the drawing board.

The R/wood fingerboard was made flat.
The new frets were leveled, crowned and polished.
Why revisit this step?

While the FB was made to be flat, a portion of the 6-8 fretboard area on the treble side remained low. I did not want to go any lower because I truly thought that the fret slots were approaching the truss rod channel. This slight deformity carried over to the frets. If you look at the picture above, you can see a dab of black at the treble edge of those frets, even at that late stage of the second pass. During the first level, I stopped when I just touched the frets. This time I took it all the way. We shall see. As jjudas said, there is no escaping geometry.

The frets are the judges. Once they have been touched, they have are level. I bit of residual ripple in the wood underneath is of no consequence.

The first fret was left rather low. That said, I strung up both E strings and they produce proper F notes when fretted and each plays cleanly along the length, with bends.

It is likely that the change in neck angle due to the .5 degree shim solved the string tension issue. I wish I would have thought of that before removing the string trees. The shim also made the action quite low and nice.

Tonight should be interesting.

Thanks again.

It's a learning process and I think you're getting your Masters on this one!
