My comments are strictly from a luthier standpoint. For general woodworking, it is a very useful tool. Do you have a jointer? My understanding is you need a true surface to work with when feeding the planer.
Nope, no jointer. One trick I saw for the planer if the wood is cupped is to use blue tape along the outer edges to support the cupped out side while planing the other side. I gots lots to learn.

Yes, something about a sled that I have not looked into. A jointer on the other hand....
 
I should mention that I already removed the Artec in favor of a GFS. The rails fall short on the high and low E side, mostly on the high side, and leave it wanting for equal volume. I had seen this in a review, but having already ordered it, I figured I would try for myself. The review was correct
