Arena Rock Cover Band:

Thanks Robert. and that is saying something considering none of you are in your 20's, huh Robert.

I throw my guitar around my neck and they start dropping $20's in our tip jar. People enjoy the show I think more than the technical proficiency. The band says I almost become possessed once we start a song. I'm jittery and jumpy and constantly engaging the crowd.

I tell everyone that there are better guitar players, but none louder or more charismatic.

So,

I have to say that right now, I think I've got the guitars dialed in like no other period in my life. Moving the pickups away from the strings - from 4/64" to around 12/64" - was something that I had heard about, but never actually tried. I've now setup both guitars this way. It does sacrifice output to some extent, but it makes up for it in both clarity and bloom. It also imparted that really compressed attack that you hear on Don Felder's solo in the live version of "One Of These Nights."

My recent Corian nut build from scratch has yielded me 100% tuning stability on the Les Paul. It rides in the back of the truck to rehearsal in the the sun and comes out of the case right on the money.

On YelloStrat, I discovered - through a lot of trial and error - that getting the strings truly straight through the nut is a very important part of making a six-screw Fender Tremolo stay in tune. Almost always, the low 'E' needs to be shifted down away from the edge of the fretboard to get the alignment correct.

I'm also using the 'double funnel' shape to the slots with a generous 'fall away' and holding slot widths to .006" to .008" oversize (consistent with Gibson published nut slot specs) as SOP. I cut my strings to a pre-recorded, specific length for the vintage tuners and I get exactly the same number of winds on the post every time. I tend to run the nut slots a little deeper than most and I cut a wide bevel into the mouth of the slot to guide the strings back into the nut, because when the strings goes slack, they raise up out of the floor of the slot.

String height at 1st fret is always held to .020" as SOP.

20210601_062537.jpgThe vintage tuners also do not require string tress, which also helps me to be able to routinely perform 11 semitone dive bombs and com back to perfect pitch every time. Don't drink the Kool-Aid about vintage tuners going out of tune. I've checked these Gotoh SD-91's with dial indicators and they do not budge. I also wind in such a way that almost every string wills share a similar angle from the nut to the tuners. Again. this is achieved by first cutting the new low 'E' string to 30-1/2" and then cutting the 'A' and 'D' to 31-1/2" and 32-1/2" respectively. You then cut the 'g,' 'b' and 'e' to 34-1/2", 35-1/2" and 36-1/2" respectively.

When I do setups on vintage tuner Stratocasters, I can cut the new strings to length in 30 seconds and produce like results on multiple guitars with exactly the same string wind pattern.

All in all, it's been a great journey to figure all these things out, gleaning some knowledge from other guitar techs and lots of trial and error to be certain!!!!

Ok,

So it looks like we gonna have another lineup change, but this time it will be me bowing out of the band.

Something has transpired between two members that is not ethical and the wife (and close friend of my wife) of one member has really been hurt by this.

My wife is exceptionally loyal and this has really vexed her spirit. My wife (also my best friend and manager) feels very strongly that to continue with the band is to almost condone this behavior.

I announced my exit from the band a couple of days ago....

Wow dude! I hope everything is ok. Very sorry to hear that news and hopefully you move forward to another project/band very soon. Wish you nothing but the best!

Man that always stinks, when the personal issues mess the band up. So hard to keep a lineup intact these days. Sometimes i think of just packing it all in & building race cars & go fishing..

Well that’s terrible news Robert. Seemed like a nice tight band, but obviously drama broke out. I think you’ll have no problem finding another band to be in as they should be honored to have you. Yet another chapter finished in the book of life.

Male/Female band member interaction can be a really difficult thing for some people. It's never been an issue for me, even when I was single, but for some, it can be a real struggle, especially when those parties are married to other people. I'm not here to pass judgement, just to say that some things I just don't feel like I can condone.

Yeah that's kind of the gist I was getting from your announcement. It's never been an issue with me either.

It really sucks because I loved my band, but I have to agree with my wife that wrong is wrong and now trust - in general - has been violated. I worked very closely with the female vocalist on our vocal projects (because we were both singers) and now there's just this feeling like I can't do it without reservation and that kills creativity.
