Is Gibson building guitars for Jay Turser now?

Well boys & girls, if you remember in our last episode we had a headstock that snapped like a twig.

So I headed out to the swamp compound about 6:30 this am.
Best time of the day, still cool (80's) and just getting light out.
Didn't have much of a problem getting glue on both sides of the break.
I used a paintbrush to spread an even film. Worked great.
Then clamped that sucker.
DSC09010.JPG
I used three clamps and blocks top & bottom to spread the load.
DSC09007.JPG
It fit real nice.
Left it clamped for about 4 hours and took a peek...
Not too bad after I cleaned up the glue squeeze out.

But we're just getting started.
Saying that it had some unevenness in the headstock veneer would be putting it mildly.
This is where I wish I wasn't out of black cyano glue.
I blocked sanded the veneer with 320 grit and used clear cyano and accelerator to fill the voids.
DSC09029.JPG
What???? o_O
Yep, then it's time to scrape.
DSC09030.JPG
And fill some more.
DSC09032.JPG
And scrape some more...
DSC09031.JPG
Then the magic starts to happen. After a hit with 600 grit to smooth things out, I dust in some black from the middle tuner holes to the nut...
DSC09035.JPG
And knock it back with 600 grit.
But I've attached as many files as permitted for this post so please follow me to the next page...

So with the black fog over knocked back to 600 grit, and the voids buried under super glue...

It's time to hit it with clear and knock it back to 600 grit once again..
DSC09047.JPG
Lather, rinse, repeat and it's starting to shape up...
It won't be perfect, but...
DSC09051.JPG
After knocking the finish back to 2500, it's starting to look better.
DSC09049.JPG
A quick series of wet sands up to 5000 grit and a quick polish.
But what about the back, Hack?
Well it looked OK, but I could feel a smidgen of a raised edge.
DSC09057.JPG
So I smoothed things out a bit and did a clear brown shade on the transition area, between the neck & headstock.
DSC09064.JPG
Ain't perfect, but it helped.
And now...

You don't get perfect for $75

Hahaha, thanks man. Yeah a Cat in Chicago wanted a specific box made into an instrument.
The box the cat wanted made was crap. Cardboard with an oilcloth looking covering.
So I used a proper ceegar box

And lifted the visual clues from the "donor box" which was this Jack Daniels Sinatra gift box...

It was cute, had a little book inside and a little metal medallion with a fedora on it.
Also had Sinatra's signature on the side. So I lifted the front label, the signature, the book and the fedora medallion and turned it into this.

Oh, I forgot to mention it opens fully, even while strung to pitch.

The book is mounted inside the oak brackets, I lined the inside of the top with the material that had the signature.
The fedora medallion is inset in the neck heel.
And that's about it.
