Call Me Crazy: Cheap Winder Build

New pickup is installed and tested. It is very smooth and balanced. Seems to work better with 1010 alloy in the bridge position than 1215 or 1022 at this amount of winding. I like the brighter sounding alloys in the neck position and I bet they would work well in a really overwound darker pickup.

Here's a really bad clip I did this morning of the new pickups in Blueberry. This is both pickups on about 9 bridge and 6 neck with tones on 10. I'm running it through a RAT into a jumpered 1987 clone into a V30 loaded pine 412. The tone is awesome, playing not so much. My phone doesn't do it justice. This is the bridge pickup I wound yesterday and the neck I did a couple weeks ago.

Been working on a neck pickup since I couldn't sleep last night. I'm using butyrate bobbins and plain enamel 42 awg wire. I put 1022 screws and 1018 slugs in these as they should be a little brighter than the normal 1010 steel for a PAF. I went for a pretty good stagger on this as well. Screw bobbin is 3.99K and slug is 3.52K which should put me pretty close to 7.5K when finished. Time to button it up and stuff it in Blueberry.

I'll see if I can do a comparison clip today of Blueberrys current pickups. Maybe that and the Classic with Antiquities and the white LP with Seth Lovers. Interestingly, I'm finding a pretty big variance on the Seth bridge pickups. I have a couple that are a good 500 ohm difference.

That would be cool to listen too...

Alright, let's give this a shot. I don't know if you will be able to hear any difference in the phone recordings, but they definitely sound different live. I'm in 100 watt mode on the DSL100HR with the volume at concrete just beginning to shake volume. All settings are exactly the same. I just switched the Shure transmitter between guitars. Tried to play the same things too. I couldn't match the screw ups though.

First up white LP with Seth Lovers.

Next, amber Les Paul with Antiquities.

Finally, blueberry with my CB2 pickups.

These are all hand wired with 550K CTS pots and .022 orange drops on lead and .015 orange drops on rhythm. Tone is completely rolled off on all neck pickup parts.

I have a pound of new style enamel wire showing up on Thursday. I'm going to see how hot I can get them and try them in the V.

I expected the Antiquities to be a little softer/less defined since they have the aged magnets. I think the Seth's have machined magnets. I'm using rough cast 2.5 inch in mine. I'll check that.

As promised, here's the V with my first set (originally in Blueberry) with all settings the same as the previous videos. These are replacing the BB2 and BB3 stock pickups. The 1022 pole screws are back in the bridge now. The V has always seemed a little darker, so this set of pickups really works great and I will most likely keep them in the V. I found the Burstbuckers and '57 Classics (were in Blueberry) both to be a little muddy sounding comparatively. These are much clearer. I've only been on Ultra Gain 1 set on 4 for all of these videos. I think the V sounds really sweet cranked up to a gain of 7-8.
