New Triumph Tigre Sport 850

In a segment with as much competition as the middleweight adventure bike category, would I buy the Tiger 850 Sport? Honestly, no. It's not that it's a bad bike, it's just that the Tiger 850 doesn't make a compelling argument for itself. With their added electronics and other niceties, the Tiger 900 or its European competitors are likely better buys

Off-the-line performance is reasonable if not thrilling, and I doubt that most people will notice the 9-hp deficit between the 850 Sport and the more expensive 900. The transmission's gearing is well-suited to the triple engine's power band. While it no longer sounds like the whistly, warbly Triumph triples of old, I still consider it and its derivatives some of the best engines in the business thanks to their smoothness, tractability and overall personality.

NIce bike......

Still -- lacking on its earlier siblings --
Triumph "HAD" it right in 2005 w/ the Tiger 955i great balance of power to weight -- torque -- size and function few "gadgets" or electronica as "simple" as a fuel injected bike can be I guess. (Its no kick start 650 thumper for sure -- but its low in "techie" terms)

THEN -- they split the Tiger into a Smaller 800 version and a 1200 .......
the 1200 gained shaft final drive (im not a fan) about 90lbs in weight/mass.....and not MUCH in hp gains for the added bulk
the 800 was underpowered and light to me (great for smaller riders though)-- Ive not tried the 850....but doubt at its PRICE POINT it would give me "gas"

the COST of them newer ones is astronomical
1200 cc model is between 16 and 20k
850 cc model 12-14k

compared to a good low mileage (if you can find one) 2005 or 2006 model
add very inexpensive remapping and exhaust upgrades can net you one of these that is 470lbs with 128 hp and can be had for (between 3 and 4k )

Stickers and road grime cost more BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

I don't see the Well-Hung sticker.......You must have visited Jethro's part of the woods eh..;):D Sasquatch

picture was taken before I got hung ;)

there is also a black berry smoke sticker thats been added since that pic--

speaking of bikes I saw a HORRIBLE rookie move the other day outside a retail store...............
beautiful full dress harley -- white with blue trim--- LOADS OF CHROME -- laying on its side in the middle of 2 stalls .....................................

fat bikes and kick stands in hot asphalt DO NOT MIX felt sorry for the poor bastard ........

the above phot was actually a COOL day (in these parts) so side stand used....... notice under the frame in front of the rear tire this LOVELY thing -- called a CENTER STAND-- IMHO I wouldn't ever buy another bike without one (after owning several with and several without over the years)

of course a 1300 lb harley is going to be a BIT harder to hoist up onto a center stand ............

poor guys probably sick over all that chrome and highly polished paint scratched up now . :(

THe Tiger pictured above has also fallen over -- a lot (in dirt .....unloading off a trailer..... in sand........in grass........ Tigers like to "nap" lol) difference being .... with an "adventure" bike the scratches and scars (get covered with decals ) lol .........it ads mojo
(and they are more "designed" for falling over) -- if you have watched any off road adventure motorcycling.......you will see bikes......falling over ....

Those bikes would scare the ship out of me. Mechanical nightmares.

My first bike was a dream of a reliable one. No Valve Adjustments due to Hydraulic lifters,
Only thing ever needed was carbs cleaned if sat over a winter, ( Pre ethanol gas) and Tires.

1985 Honda Nighthawk S 700 cc of great bike.

I have had Honda's and a Yamaha, great bikes reliable. Now i can tell you i wouldn't hesitate to buy Suzuki or the newer Triumphs either today.

Norm, I would prefer to buy all my vehicles whether they be 2, 4, 6 wheeled ones, from the years 1910-1990 with 1990 pushing the comfort zone of NEW end of things for my own tastes. I can properly work on and fix most anything in this time frame.

I actually do own a 1994 Ford Pickup, but flat out would not want to own anything in the time after that till now. TOO darn complicated and expensive to maintain.

this thing was PURE poetry in motion what a WONDERUL balanced comfortable FAST machine this thing was --Id have another in a HEARTBEAT!

Once I replaced the sprag (starter) clutch .... I never had a single issue -- the Tiger is pushing 40,000 miles ( considered a "high mileage bike" ) but frankly its just getting past the "wearing in " period

My SPeed Triple
