HPLs are made from a number of laminations or layers of what is, essentially, paper. It’s slightly different to the paper we use every day but, for all intents and purposes, it’s paper.
There’s generally an overlay layer, sitting over a ‘decorative’ layer (more on this in a sec), and then one or more layers of a stronger paper.

So after I got the binding the other day, I built a cocoon out of the packing material in anticipation of the mess I was going to make with the binding glue and a can of clear.



I'm an animal, I know what happens when I get near glue. So every surface that can be slopped up with glue had to be masked.
But first, I moved it into my state of the art, climate controlled spray booth for a couple coats of clear to seal the back.


Then it was binding time.


I glued the binding into place, using tape as I go to hold it down.

Then it was time to scrape

And scrape and scrape and scrape some more. When I was satisfied with the feel, I hit the back with a little more clear.
And it emerged from it's cocoon, transformed into what is starting to look like a guitar again.


After the clear sets up, I'll wetsand it and hit it with a few more coats of clear.
It's getting there.
Looks a whole lot better that the first repair already.

I HAVE SEEN THIS PROJECT -- actually YESTERDAY --- and even in BRIGHT SUN LIGHT --- looking for the evidence of damage.......CLOSELY (before beers) -- I couldnt find em till Hack pointed to them...................and even then I had to hold the guitar this way and that to find any evidence..

WTF

The compressed paper HPL looks like convincing wood grain on the outside.

And it wasn't the high pressure laminate itself that failed....
but where they glued the material, the glue joints failed where HPL joined to spruce and where the bracing was glued to spruce etc.

the TRUTH is .there never WAS ANY ...........truth --- -- -- in ADVERTISING

when you look up ADVERTSING it should be syn·on·y·mous with "paid lying"--- "polishing a turd for resale" --- or "bull" ........

First I fixed a Blues Jr.
Then the dude with the BJ gave me the Martin. The bridge was pulled up and it wasn't really playable.
I found out what it was made out of paper, and became disgusted with the entire affair.
Then I sold the guitar on Craigs list for $100. I took like 1 hour to sell it.
Then the buyer fixed it and sold it on Craigs list for $300....
and so on.

I have a paper and propeller-wood Mexi-Martin. I don’t travel with it much. It usually hangs by my chair in the living room...and occasionally in the studio, on a stand, by my desk. The darned thing is incredibly stable...tuning wise. I rarely have to do much, if any, tuning when I pick it up. Not sure exactly when I picked it up...2012-2013 maybe.
