Rant: people complaining about living in a wonderful city

I grew up just outside a major city. Baltimore. Also was born in another, Cleveland. Both have terrible reputations for crime and corruption.
They also have SOME good facets, but none that appealed to me. All my life, I much preferred NATURE and the country living. In the end, any time I had to, had to, had to, go into the city to work, I had a mindset and saying about the city. Bottom line is to me, City is a 4 letter word.

All cities are wonderful, until you have to live there.
I think the same can be said about rural living too. It comes down to a misconception on both sides about what life is like on the other: if you lived rural your whole life, you'd be lead to believe metro life would be so much better. If you've always lived in a city, you'd probably long for a quite secluded life away from everyone. Neither turn out to be what they're cracked up to be once you are part of it lol

I admit, its like Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now for me living here and then vacationing somewhere else: "When I was here, I wanted to be there, when I was there all I could think of was getting back into the jungle."

The pros of a good city life vs a bad rural one however, comes down to accessibility for me. Having anything you need or want at your disposal. Plus, im a bit different than most i guess: i find total privacy and comfort in a very public setting and can blend right into the scenery.

Hope you love it. A High School friend of mine moved there in 1982. Him and his wife just retired last year and moved to Sparks Nevada.

They loved San Diego and I have spent plenty of time there myself. I like it as well. They wanted more space for the money and their
property had increased in value 10 times. They had their dream home built and are loving the change.

Getting used to it fast for sure. I'd always suspected it would be an amazing place to live and happy to report that I was right. But, any time you change your lifestyle there is an adjustment period - we went from living 2 blocks from the beach in LA to downtown near the marina in SD and there's a bit of culture shock we are getting over along with the overall slower pace of life here (sounds funny to say that about living downtown in a major US city).

I've lived in big cities, suburbs, small towns, beaches, mountains and rural environments at various times in my life. The one thing I could never do again is rural living, followed closely by living full-time in the mountains (we have a getaway place in the mountains that I love going to for a couple weeks at a time to relax). I've accepted that I just need a lot more stimulus and choices than those places provide, and I really love being able to walk everywhere. One of the culture-shock differences between LA and SD is that in LA you absolutely require an automobile to survive, whereas here I've been going 2-3 weeks without using my car. I really only use it when I need to go to Lowe's to pick up stuff for the house.

Man, I knew this, but it sure is something that you, Adrian and I are from Ohio. I was likely the youngest to have left. I was 2.

Then there are DonO and Gball. Both lived 10-20 minutes from my current home in Md. before residing in Ca. Chasfred also left Md. for Az

I left at 19. Had done very little travel prior to then and had never flow on a plane...

just glad i got to keep the humble 1880's built house and address for my biz. York & Harrisburg are very violent last few years. Most locksmith companies are done at night. We sky rocketed in calls.

Was looking at big houses, with garages , decided to accept what & where i am as gift & treasure it.

Just left seeing both my daughters & 2 of the grandkids not in school. Both bought houses 5 minutes from me. priceless.

At 56 give me peace & to each their own. Band time !!

Boston has always been notorious for it's corruption. There used to be this guy named Whitey who owned all the police departments and FBI. His brother Billy was in state politics. After years of living in this state, I'll never trust a cop. You'd be foolish if you did. They are the worst type of criminal on the planet.

I love being able to walk everywhere. We have two nice old theatres with great live music within about a fifteen minute walk from my house. As well as several bars, restaurants, shops, the library, and waterfront. After driving all week, it's nice being able to go for a nice relaxing walk, then go do something, and walk home.

We live inbthe 'burbs now. We moved here almost 4 years ago when it was time dor our kid to start school. It' s getting messy hear though, violence, drugs, kids beating on kids. We still like it here but we would feel better if it was the calm and quiet place we moved to, for our son.

Few places are better though. We've been around, travelled, lived in cities, on boats on a small island. All areas have their problems, their ups and downs, their good and their bad. We know what we've got and it sure as hell ain't ad bad as it could be.

John, This is one of the most well written articles I have ever read. Too bad the same writer was not able to write parts 2, 3, 4 etc in the years Mayor then Governor O'Malley was in office, and all the replacements that came after him, the elected officials who operated in ways they gained financially from, only to be indicted themselves, and despite some even serving time, they either run for office again or actually get re- elected much like Mayor Barry did in DC after his Cocaine etc busts.

This is a long article,. but I think anyone who reads it will get a pretty good idea on the environment that is the norm for decades on end here in Bodymore. Oh and I can't tell you the reasons the Former NYC policeman, turned Baltimore City Police chief lost his job, ( with specifics) let's juts say, crime has done nothing but fester and grow and even reach lock down the streets and curfew the " zoo" Google Baltimore and Freddie Gray riots.
Just a sample, oh yeah, and they had so many riots and fires and such, that one actual Orioles Baseball game was held with 0 fans. Nothing like that ever happened until then and none since, until of course Covid took control.

Things get really juicy in Bodymore too. Like Extra marital affairs and possible attempts to rub out the other party of said affair.

Back when this was all happening, Friends and I were at a Motorcycle Swap meet outside of Daytona Beach FLorida. As we were being directed where to park our bikes, we saw one of the lot guys wearing a Baltimore City Police hat. My buddy does not go into any other details but asks this question word for word. He says to the guy, " Is it True?" The man in the hat says, " Absolutely.

Check out this juicy tale.

Do you all remember the scandal that broke out back in 2004 alleging that news anchor Sade Baderinwa was dating the currently married Presidential candidate Martin O-Malley? Many of you might still remember it today. But there are several of you who don’t know about affair. So, here is a refresher…

The news anchor at New York's WABC Channel 7, Baderinwa, aged 46, is beautiful black woman, who seems perfect in every way possible. But she does have her dark secrets, her dirty past that will haunt her for the rest of her life.
The Eyewitness News co-anchor was said to have had an affair with Democratic Presidential candidate, O-Malley, who was then the Governor of Maryland. Though O-Malley has denied all allegations, there are several rumors that still surround both Baderinwa and O’Mally.
In 2004, Sade nearly got killed after she was hit by a car while preparing a report on location in Hackensack, New Jersey about local flooding. The car struck her and the unidentified driver was never caught. The news host suffered serious injuries and it took her multiple surgeries and several months to fully recover from her condition.
You must be wondering why we are talking about this hit and run accident instead of telling you about O’Malley’s extra marital affair with Sade. We all know that you all are thinking “This has got nothing to do with their affair!!’. But believe us people when we say this particular incident has got everything to do with the affair.
While everybody else took the accident as an ‘accident’, there were and are several people who believe that the accident was planned by none other than the O-Malley’s wife, Catherine. It was allegedly an attempt to stop Sade from opening her mouth about her affair with O-Malley.
The accident almost cost Sade her life. While she was getting ready to cover the flood in Hackensack, the anonymous driver ran through police lines and hit her and drove away, never to be caught. And several took the incident as a conspiracy against Sade by Mrs. O-Malley.
Though no reports of Sade’s affair with O-Malley are found, the former Mayor of Baltimore and his wife denied the rumors of his affair with an anonymous woman (most probably Sade) back then when the topic was hot.
It was/is being said that the ‘white, married’ mayor allegedly left Sade pregnant and in order to save his name and maintain his façade of a faithful husband and a loving father, the news anchor was send to New York City. And it was there that Sade almost lost her life after being hit by the car. Several people still believe that the rumor about Sade and O-Malley’s affair was true and the secret would have been revealed if the former was not hit by the mysterious car.
And it is still believed that Sade ultimately lost her baby, the only proof of her romantic, or should we say sexual, relation with O-Malley. Though there are several theories about their relationship and the accident, nobody knows the fact and we would love to know it someday.
Both Sade and O-Malley act as if nothing has happened between them, so it is hard for us to say if they were actually dating. As of now, O-Malley is running for President and this dark haired beauty is single, has no boyfriend and is looking forward to her heightening career. We can say one thing for sure, she has no intention of getting married right now.
Her annual salary is believed to be $362,560 and her net worth is estimated to be $5 million dollars.

WHEN THE CROW pecks at an EAGLE, he sits on his back and bites his neck. The Eagle does not respond or fight with the crow. It doesn't waste time or energy on the crow. It simply opens its wings and begins to rise higher in the sky. The higher the flight, the harder it is for the crow to breathe. Eventually the crow falls due to lack of oxygen. Stop wasting your time with the crows.
Just make yourself go higher, achieve a new level and they'll fade.

I dont know if its true -- but hey -- "F" the small stuff is the message

Just for fun, The only Person in charge that ever reduced the violent crime and actually improved the city police dept and their methods of fighting crime, gets a bad rap and things go back to the inmates running the asylum.

nope I dont........................ who the "F" are any of these people? never heard of them..... dont care.....see post #74.

Of course you don't remember. The powers that be, hid the story under the rug as best they could.

Only to make my point in Post #73............. Even 900 miles away in Daytona FL, the stench of Md Politics was so bad, that a mere 3 word question was answered by someone who could obviously sniff out BS and confirm. "Is it true? " "Absolutely"

WOW, moved Only 13 times. Heck, my sister moved so many times and I carried all her crap each time. I think she was up to 19 places between age 16 and 26. I used to go to job sites and pass a neighborhood near one of her former residences, and I'd tell my work partner my sis used to live just down the street. He heard that so many times we used to say Kilroy had nothing on her. Our running joke was "Karen was Here"

Speaking of moves. Back in 1982-1986 I wanted to move to California in the LA area or anywhere nice in SoCal near the beaches and sun and girls and virtually all year round motorcycle riding opportunities.

Once I graduated college in 1986 I took a cross country trip there in a friend's car and we landed in Fullerton at her cousin's house. She stayed and before I knew it, I was essentially made to feel like I better have a plan on where I would be staying ASAP. Wound up getting a Southwest Air flight to San Jose Airport for $39 and had ahigh school friend of mine from Maryland pick me up and take me back to his apartment in Fremont. We hung out for a couple weeks but of course he had a job to go to during the days, while I would walk the streets of Fremont with my Resume at the ready if I found anyone hiring. Sadly, even with my degree, I was unable to find a job in business of any sort, and arranged for my buddy to drop me off at San Fran airport in the wee hours to catch my red eye flight back to Maryland.

Essentially giving up on finding a job and a home and life in California, I found work at an insurance company, a car dealer, and eventually as a framing carpenter over the next 3 years back in Maryland. From there on, I became an Uncle, a Remodeling contractor, and the rest is history. Been broke ever since.

Mark........ do you need a hug?

(excellent karen tie in -- 10 points for that!!! )
