Wood Switch Tips

I was looking for 3 way toggle switch tips, and the price annoyed me. So I had the idea to try and make them. So far, I

And I already have some of these 3/4 pen blanks

I would like a find pen blanks or similar wood that is smaller in the future to save work, but 3/4" is not a bad starting point.

Suggestions are stronly encouraged! This is an idea in progress.

Watched the video. Pretty cool how he turned a piece of bone into the tip.

Found it interesting he spent part of his life working in a Case Construction dealership. Same place I spent the majority of my adult life. Case Dealership. Tractors, combines, construction equip.... etc.

One thing I noticed was.... he used vice grips on the tap. I’ve been known to do that to clean threads.... but not start threads. Considering the tool box full of tools he showed in the video..... he didn’t have a proper T-Wrench for the tap?

Also noticed no eye protection in case something comes apart while using the drill and band sander or mask for the bone dust you see in the video. But then.... I’m also that guy that spots the person working under his car and NOT using proper Jack stands. It’s a curse.

Anyway. Looking forward to your finished product. Who knows.... side job?

You can live without the proper wrench. Again. I’ve done it. I’ve used a crescent wrench rather than vice grips..... but it can be done. It’s just when starting new threads, it’s so easy to get the tap started crooked rather than plum if you don’t us a t-wrench.

I did 2 Purple Heart builds and used PH switch knobs (not cheap) from the same guy that makes the wooden pup rings. He used a swedged in brass insert for the threaded part.

Brass inserts are nice. Do you think maple will hold the thread? Otherwise, I will try bone.

I’d do a test piece with the 8-32 tap and see. I don’t think I ever tapped wood (no jokes required ).

just leave the switch where it is ---- get another identical guitar with the postion switch in the middle....and another for the 3rd.....then you NEVER have to touch the switch -- and it will last FOREVER ..................

I am happy but a bit embarrassed to find that I have a stash of taps and T wrenches, including the 8-32 taps needed here. I even have a second box with larger taps. This is what happens when your dad gives you tools before you know how to use them! Onward!

Oh good. That video was painful to watch. I was hoping that you‘d invest in a proper tap handle. Good to see that you have a couple. Vise grips????
