DOC’s Studio Build…

More HVAC duct work in the studio today. I got the main line that heats the living room above the studio installed across the ceiling. It’s suspended from the ceiling with an air gap and resting on mass loaded vinyl pads on the hangers. It goes from the register in the living room across the studio ceiling, makes a 90 degree turn down and then a 90 degree turn to the right. I’ll use an insulated round flex duct behind the air gapped wall to connect it to the furnace just on the other side of the studio wall at the far right.

Here’s what I started with last year when we bought the place.

And now today.

Still lots of work going on, just not in the studio. With colder months here I need to get the HVAC installed for the basement (for a total of 3 systems, one for each floor). Got a vendor in and got a good quote. But, before I can do the HVAC work I need a plumber to reroute some water lines, install a new hot water heater, install a toilet and stub out water lines and drain for a vanity and bar sink. They also need to reroute some gas lines and install the gas line run for the new HVAC. First plumber comes out, we go through the list of 6 items. A week later I get a quote and ask when can ya start. No response, 2 phone call voice mails and a half dozen texts, jeez. Call another plumber, he comes over, we go through the list. Says he’ll send a quote next week. Crickets, no response to texts. I’ve now lost 3 weeks. Got a 3rd plumber out, go through the list and he writes a simple estimate on the spot with no itemization or breakdown, way high quote. I blow him off as a flake.
Finally get a get good firm to come our, ask lots of questions, we go over a lot of details. Took them a week to quote. Called them the next day and said when can ya start. 2 weeks. So it took me almost 6 weeks to get a plumber lined up to do $8K worth of work. I guess there’s just too much bigger work to be bother by my simple stuff. Whew, they star next week and then the HVAC install is right after them.

In this process I then had to built the walls for the bathroom so the toilet and vanity lines can be run. In the pics below you can see 3 of the 4 walls. The bathroom is right outside the shop. While designing the bathroom I look over at the headboard from my water bed that I built around 1982 when I bought my first house and radial arm saw. It’s got 22 different flavors of wood in it and served me well for 38 years, but got retired here at the new place. A light bulb went off and I then figured out how to incorporate it into the bathroom wall structure. Bingo, preserved for another 50 years!

The Construction industry is crazy right now! Glad your place is progressing. Hope that the work gets done before it gets painfully cold over there!

Can't wait to see this finished. This is going to turn out great...

Me too. I need the HVAC installed so I can work through the winter. The entire floor, walls and ceiling are insulated. Once the HVAC is installed it’s full speed ahead to getting the drywall installed in the studio !

Oh, and did I mention the cost of 2x4s? Last batch of 100 I paid 55 cents a LF back in March, so an 8ft stick was $4.40 (high compared to HD but someone has to drive it up the mountain). I needed another 40 and now they are 99 cents a LF, almost doubled in price to $8 a stick, damn.

Don we have not met yet, but your studio I think that I will have the privilege to meet, not only you and your family, but a couple more of the members here.
I personally can’t wait to see you finish it.
Cheers
Mitch

Media room?

Multi purpose room. From where the picture is taken if I turned around there will be a 82 inch big screen TV and surround sound system With 6 Polk audio speakers mounted in the walls and ceiling. At the far end will be a large wall to wall, floor to ceiling set of cabinets for the wife‘s crafting and quilting hobby. Leaning on the 6x6 under the fireman’s coat is a 4x8 granite slab that was the top of an island in our loft at our previous home. All the cabinets that made up the island are behind those 2 big oak units in the pic. I’m gonna find a welder to make me a heavy duty frame with casters that I can mount those cabinets to and then put the granite slab on to have an island that can be moved around in the room. The wife and her friends do quilting and hobby weekends, so the plan is for us to entertain them in this room.

Got the plumbers here a few weeks ago and got the new hot water heater installed in a new location. The hot water heater is on WiFi and cab be controlled by Alexa. I’m into home automation stuf.

The also installed the water, drains and vents for the toilet, vanity and a bar sink. Got the gas lines re-routed and a stub installed for the FAU.

The plumbers were followed up by the HVAC guys. Got the current furnace for the ground floor moved next to the new hot water heater and connected up to all the new rectangular galvanized ducts I installed. They also re-rerouted the cold air return which is that big god awful black tune in the pic below.

Then they installed the new furnace and AC unit for the basement and all it’s ductwork in the sub-basement Uber the basement. I installed 2 wifi controlled thermostats (also Alexa controlled), the primary one in the multi-purpose room and a second one in the studio. I have a 4 pole double throw toggle switch that selects which one is connected to the system.

The basement is now a livable space!

HVAC and water heater before pic.
