See the upside of the swamp---98% relative humidity 300 days out of the year means YOU REALLY GOTTA TRY to burn some poop -- I mean LOADS of gasoline....bottle rockets-- black powder -- just to get a campfire!

come on Don you can do it! -- it is flame retardant -- :) you could do a little brick shelf over to the window for "pass throughs" (or a glory hole) --oh come on I know Goo thought of it -- or at least Blinkie -- :)
get creative man -- your in the middle of no where--- (thanks for putting on clothes before the fire shot)

Nope, when you get to see your dream home being within 2 minutes of burning to the ground, your outlook on what risks to take is greatly sharpened.
 
Wow @Don O ! I’m glad everyone is ok, and the new homestead is reasonably intact structurally!
Twenty feet....that is my minimum distance for home grill placement...not on a wood deck...that is a must for me...I laid out a little patio-block grill pad, a few years ago, for mine.(I’m a charcoal and wood guy though)
Again, I’m glad that this was not a worse outcome.

The pic with the red circle is where I put a board over a hole into the house. That hole goes to inside a kitchen cabinet. I figure if it had burned another minute the kitchen would have been on fire too. Damn, we dodged a HUGE bullet.

It looks like the Romex wire inside the wall got to hot, and the PVC insulation melted.
The wires temporarily got red hot when the PVC insulation failed. Then the breaker tripped, but too late.
That hot wire was enough to start the 4X6 post inside the wall burning.
Yup, electrical fire.
Bet you didn't see that?
Lucky the gas didn't explode.
Good to be alive today.

Now one more thing:
If the hole in the post was a bigger hole, it may not have ignited.
This is a constant problem with electrical wiring: forcing too many wires into too small a hole. The wire must have air all around it, to cool off.
The wire is good to about 90 degrees C.
When all those wires are packed into a small hole space, it creates a hot spot.

Roger that on the electric. I was amazed that the gas line to the BBQ did not burn through . Stupid me left the valve open to burn off the food. Had that burned through it would have been a blow torch that I could not put out. I'd be living n the RV in the driveway if that had happened.

We are happy and relieved you are safe. Here are some pics of the October 31, 2019 wildfire that came very near to our home...

The winds - which were blowing north to south at about 65-70mph, pushed the fire down the hill and several homes were lost. Note the palm trees in the photo being ravaged by the wind.

In the first photo, your pad is directly in line with this home.

In a surprising twist, the wind changed direction, blowing the flames back across its own path, starving it for fuel...firefighters were then able to contain it quickly.

We only live about 12 miles from you...

Robert, you are welcome here any time. This area was burned bad in 2007, 191 homes lost to fire. This house was spared due to a good defensible area around the house ( driveway and cement). Since then there are a few trees that have to go. Fire is so good, yet so destructive.

Yup. The 2008 fire during the Santa Ana winds that started in Corona and burned for 10 miles along the 91 freeway then jumped the freeway heading towards our home in Anaheim Hills was the first (and only) time we got stuff ready to put in the car to evacuate. The wife comes down the stairs with some jewelry and photo albums. Meanwhile I’ve got 6 or 8 guitars by the front door ! The fire department got it stopped before it reached us.

That same fire burned homes in Yorba Linda on the other side of the freeway, 500 feet from where I used to live.
