Almost lost it all...

Took a day for the adrenaline to wear off to post this.

A lot of you know we bought a new place in Lake Arrowhead last year In following my DOC’s Studio build thread. Our last home had a nice BBQ island I built, but I certainly couldn’t move that to the new place so I ordered a new grill for the new house Last month. It got placed against the house in the picture below, just below that light and you can see the natural gas line in the lower right.

So we have friends over for the weekend and we did BBQ chicken on the grill. Nice dinner. Around 2 AM Karen and I both smelled something burning. Then I said, sh#t we left the BBQ on to burn off the chicken. I got up and went out and turned off the 3 burners that were still on.

We go back to sleep and around 3 AM we both wake up since it looks like daylight out the window, WTF! I run over and the back of the house is on FIRE. No kidding a wall of flame. I yell fire as we have another couple staying with us the weekend, and had Karen dialed 911. I then run down into the garage and grab 3 fire extinguishers and ran out the back door. As I was sitting them down getting ready to start shooting, then I remember I just hooked the hose up a few days ago and turned it on (it was in winter mode) as you look at the picture above you see it is disconnected. I grabbed that thing, turned on full blast and started dosing the forward parts of the flame heading to the west under the eve and them the flames climbing up to the second story.

Thank God I was able to get them under control, because if we had slept another minute the entire back of the house would have been in flames. Also it was a windless night or I’d be looking at a pile of ashes.

So Karen calls 911 and they answer, “911, Anaheim” since our Magic Jack phone number is still 714 area code and that’s where it got routed. It took another few minutes to get through to the local 911. 2 engines and an ambulance showed up, by that time I had the flames out but there was still a lot of hot spots. They took over from there.

Some more shots.

The pic with the red circle is where I put a board over a hole into the house. That hole goes to inside a kitchen cabinet. I figure if it had burned another minute the kitchen would have been on fire too. Damn, we dodged a HUGE bullet.

Wow Don! You were so lucky to wake up in time. In my contracting days I did a couple of fire rehabs. I hacked out pieces of lungs for a year after each one. The $ was so good that I couldn't pass any up BUT the health issues afterward made me finally decided to never do another one. Anything charred a little had to be spray covered in this elastomeric fire encapsulation, looked like that spray foam product they sell ay home improvement stores. That gets rid of the never ending fire smell which can linger for years. Gees, look how close the fire was to that gas line and the fire went other directions! I would count my blessings on that one as it could of been much worse.

Oh man....that's terrible.

My brother had the same thing happen to him a couple years ago. Woke up at 3am with the house on fire after having a BBQ on the back porch. His place is brick, but once the fire got up under the eaves it still ruined everything. He had to replace everything and rebuild the roof and remodel most of the house.

Glad to hear you're all ok, and in the end, like you said...could have been a lot worse.

Talk about having a shitty day

WTF?!?!?!?!

how the HELL?!?!? what ignited it ??? you turned it off yes????

LOOK seriously two VERY important questions-- ARE THE GIBSON P90 pups o.k.???????????

(did the Firemen SEE the MURDER ROOM????????) -- this could be problematic ;)

no seriously WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?! how -- why--- WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!

I have a grill -- is it a ticking powder keg?!?!?!?!

That's fricking crazy, Don. Thank God y'all are OK... (y). Seems like you were able to get the fire under control before total devastation happened, including the fact that no one was injured or lost their lives. I'm hoping no squirrels were hurt either, ha ha! After looking at your pics, I'll never have a BBQ grill tethered so close to the house. Have you already thought of some new plans for a BBQ station?

Might I suggest

its a little drive -- but the house (and the Murder Room) will remain in tact---- ;)

or this one even delivers.............

Thanks guys. The root cause is homeowner stupidity. My previous 3 homes were all stucco so I’ve never really thought of issues having a wood sided house. Even though that area was designed for a BBQ, I‘m sure it was NOT designed for a BBQ to be too close and on high for 6 hours. The BBQ Did not catch fire Since it was not on fire when I turned it off at 2 AM. My theory is it got the internal wood of the house so hot that after I turned it off, the wood was was already smoldering in the wall and combusted an hour later.
The next BBQ will be propane and will only be used out in the driveway.

so hey -- no --
put the grill back on the deck -- just replace that section of wall with decorative heat retardant bricks --I had a wood burning stove in my first home similar to this layout
