Another NAD!

The 40C is really a killer amp. I had one for a couple years, only sold it cause I found a 6101 30th anniversary 1x12 combo rendering the 40C redundant. I liked channel one crumch mode with an OD it did not have enough gain for me without one so that was one point. Always had to have a pedal to use it properly.
But a very good soumding amp. Congrats! It sounds like a Marshall.

Dang... It looks brand new!

A big Congrats Wil on your new amp!!! Now all you need to make that Marshall hum, is plug a Godin into it!!
If a Godin is going to make my Marshalls hum, or any other amp for that matter, then I don't want any of them hum-inducing Godin's. Hell... I've gone through a lot of trouble trying to reduce as much hum as possible on my amps...

Let me rephrase that statement Greg. The term hum was a wrong choice of words I should of said plug in a Godin into that Mashall and really make it Rock.;)

It's too late now, Norm. It's all over the internet: Cinco De Mayo, 2020, Robert Godin stated on TTR: "Godin's Makes Marshalls Hum!" It is now irreversible, and because it is on the internet, it is true... :dancepoo:

UPDATE: In preparation to sell the Traynor YCV40 mentioned at the beginning of this saga, I have removed the Eminence Governor and installed it into the Marshall. I took the stock Celestion Seventy 80 from the Marshall and put it in the Traynor. The factory stock speaker for the Traynor was a Seventy 80 so it is now back to it's original configuration.

Many posts in the Marshall Amp Forum seem to indicate that the Marshall DSL40C can benefit from a speaker swap that will tame some of the shrill highs and smooth out the overall tone. This Eminence Governor should hopefully do the trick. The best part? I already have the speaker so no further cash investment!

As of yet I only had a chance to try out the new speaker in the Marshall at bedroom levels so I cannot say whether there is much of a difference or not. I will have to wait for the house to myself to try this out at volume to really judge the difference.

uhm 70/80--- 60/40-----what is WITH THAT F***KING Canuck Math?!?!?!?!

what are ----- who the-- WHY ----are you converting decimals ? - ugh

Let me get the hand puppets out and I will explain it all to you!:ROFLMAO:

Seriously, though, the Celestion Seventy 80 seems to be the low, low end of the Celestion range and they sell it to many OEMs who use it to keep their costs down. Traynor and Marshall both use them.
From a construction standpoint, the Eminence steel basket was much thicker and more robust and the magnets were more substantial. The Eminence weighs considerably more than the Celestion as well.
So much for a grab and go amp! It’s now about 55lbs I think!

Congratulations on your new amp.
I have 2 of them, and still with the stock 70/80 speakers, they are quite versatile and they sound like a Marshall...
Once again congratulations on your new amp.

Latest update:

After some advice from our Robert Herndon, I swapped out all the preamp tubes with what he is running in his. WOW...I mean WOW! This amp is now absolutely amazing sounding and the characteristic bass mushiness and top end fizz is gone. It is a beast!

I can’t wait for this lockdown to end so I can get to the rehearsal room to really open this amp up!

Yeah, Robert spent a lot of time conjuring up the magic sauce on his DSL40. What did you end up putting in there, including the power tubes too?

The power tubes are unchanged and are the stock Marshall branded EL34.
There is now an ECC823 in V1. Then a 5751, EC83MG and a balanced 5751 in the PI spot. The ECC823 in V1 has the first half of the tube same as a 12AX7 but the second half of the tube is a 12AU7. This keeps the clean channel the same but reduces the gain on the OD channel. Much more useable. All the new pre tubes are JJs.
I have rebiased slightly as the amp was balanced but was slightly cool at 36mA per side. I bumped the bias up to 38.5mA.
The gain on the OD channel is now a bit lower but much tighter and not flabby or mushy. The high end fizziness that the DSL40C is known for is now gone. All in all, the amp is much improved, IMHO.

My sincere thanks go out to Robert Herndon as I would never have stumbled upon this winning formula without his advice! Thank you Robert!!!!

Good observation. What i was searching for was a clear, tight and focused effect when playing palm muted sections.

It took a tube swap and a Tube Screamer to get there....
