In coming supplies. Was almost out of 2x4s and insulation. Just delivered today was 100 2x4s and 16 batts of insulation along with 10 cut 4x8 MDFs. This shelter-at-home is quite timely for me

Looking good. Used a couple of the bags of Rockwool Safe'n Sound in my cellar renovation. Just two and a half walls so far. After I can get the shop usable, I'll think about what I want to do with the ceiling. Would really like to pack that well also.

Its a piece of cake to work with. With a serrated bread knife like tool it cuts like butter.

The ceiling is my biggest concern for soundproofing. The studio is directly below the living room. The living room and dining room are one big room with an 18 ft ceiling. Any sound that escapes the studio through the ceiling is gonna reverberate in that big room.

The current “stack up” from top to bottom is:

1/2“ hardwood acacia flooring
3/4” plywood sub floor
2x10 joists with R30 insulation
5/8” OSB

The OSB is the current ceiling in the studio. My plan is to then add the 1 lb per sq ft mass loaded vinyl on the entire ceiling. Then install 1 inch resiliency channel on 16 in centers with 1 inch thick Rockwool S&S in between. 5/8” drywall then gets screwed to the resiliency channel. Then every drywall seam and around the entire perimeter gets filled with acoustic caulk. Sound is like water in a baggy, any little pin hole and out it comes.
The final layer is another layer of 5/8” drywall, with the seams offset from the current layer, and a tube of green glue laid down on this second sheet to create a small air gap between the 2 layers of drywall.

I plan on doing the MLV, resiliency channel and S&S install. I’m gonna pay someone to do the drywall install cause that’s just hard, heavy work.

Don, Dead air space will kill the sound look up 1/2" hat channel I used 5 layers of 5/8" drywall with hat channel.
I went from the cops knocking on my door to 4000 watts RMS day or night no problem now.

Steve, the resiliency channel is hat channel. Like you said, dead air space is good. The green glue also makes a small air gap. But 5 layers of drywall, damn ! I’m not as concerned about the walls. Two are exterior with 2x6 studs with R30 then a 1 inch air gap then a 2x4 wall on 24” centers filled with 4” S&S, covered with 2 layers of 5/8” drywall just like the ceiling. My closest neighbor is 100s of feet away.

This really is a fascinating thread. @Don O , I'm very impressed by your workmanship and knowledge on home construction and sound proofing. If there's one thing that I regret in my life for not paying more attention to when I was much younger: Home Construction! My hat's is off to you boyz and girlz who know what they're doing when it comes to building a home...

What kind of bird is that? Looks like miniature osprey.

That’s no dog; it’s a coyote No clue on the bird type. The previous owner was into birds and she said she documented over 75 species that she had seen. I’m living in the wilderness now!

Some assembly required. Got all the wood and insulation moved inside today. Got lots of materials to work with now and the weather is just great this time of year.
