Just Scored Eric Johnson Tickets!

I have never heard of Eric Johnson..

I forgive you,

You've been shovelling a lot of snow since the '80s,,,(well...maybe not so much because there has been lot of CO2 pumped into the air since the 1890s)...

...So...we essentially "F'ed" ourselves and our kids....but..no matter!

Party on, Wayne...and party on...Garth....!

Yeah...!!!!

Anyhoo....This won a Grammy.

Your eyes should be closed about now!

No worries, my East Coast Compadre!

Keepin' it real in the Mid-Atlantic! We Gotta keep those Pacific boiz in check...Know what I'm sayin', G....?

But, yeah, It's a Two Rock.

I zoomed in on your pic. It's most def a Two-Rock.

My Man...the "EJ"...likes to rock the Two-Rock amps!

He was definitely rockin’ it. He was ducking around back often to adjust it, and to play with the Tube Driver pedal. He was doing it all himself. No tech doing the switching off in the wings.

As soon as I seen the Strat smitty, I knew he had to be good!

Cool on yous!!
I know of EJ (Cliffs of Dover), but dont know his work otherwise, will check it out.
Writing a Post-It note now!!

We got Steve Miller tickets for August; not my "oh my god gotta go" band, but like a lot of his stuff.

Still bummed our Bad Co. got canceled - 2nd time we got snubbed on Bad Co.
Glad I saw Paul Rodgers twice: once with Jimmy Page with The Firm decades ago, and the Paul Rodgers Band in Atlantic City a few years ago. Small venue, great show up pretty close.

I saw the Firm when the first record came out. Went to the show in Providence, RI.

Okay...this is a total guitar nerd-fest!

I’ve gotten a few pics I’ll post later.

I’ve gotten close enough to his pedal board to touch it (I didn’t touch it, though I did get pics).

I’ve already gotten into about three conversations about guitar gear with other concert-goers here.

About 40 minutes to show time!

Alrighty...

That was truly a great concert. I WILL go see him again!

So, let me get some pics going here...

These are pre-concert shots.

We arrived before the doors opened, so we were some of the first to our seats.

Here's just a stage shot a couple minutes after we got in. You'll notice the guitar rack with four basses in it. The bass player took the stage with a bass already strapped on. So, all told the bass player cycled through five basses as the night progressed. Eric's guitars were brought to him by a stage tech. He didn't keep them on stage.

Here's a shot of the amp rig:

This is a shot of that Two Rock I was talking about earlier:

This is part of his pedal board:

And...the rest of his board. Just before the concert started, a stage tech came out and plugged his pedals in, which you see unplugged here.

Finally, this shot just shows a bit of what was happening right up to the concert start. Guys were all over the front of the stage area looking at his rig and taking pictures. Yes, I was one of those guys! I did my bit of gawking just before I went back to my seat and took this picture.

Now for some actual concert shots....

This is soon after he took the stage:

A little bit closer view of the man in action!

Eric Johnson Concert Shot 2.jpg

Just to let you know he's not scared of a Les Paul!

Eric Johnson Concert Shot 3.jpg

Here he is doing a little acoustic work. He had several acoustic songs, some from his latest albums. This song was pretty interesting because there were two basses. The main bass player did a lot of bass lead work. The guy to the far right, who also played keys and guitar, played the other bass on this song.

This shot isn't the best because I had to zoom across the stage, but he did a few stints on the piano, too.

So, that's about it!

What I realized as I began reviewing my pics is that this concert was very old-school, as far as technology is concerned. They used stage monitors instead of in-ears. None of the instruments used a wireless system. Everything was plugged in with a physical cable. When Eric or other other instruments were changed, we all watched very attentively as the one was unplugged in and the new one was plugged in.

I'm certainly not bashful about a lot of tech or processing, but I do admit that it was pretty cool to watch such a great show done with a more raw, vintage approach.

The place was filled with guitar players. Every one I spoke to while awaiting the show start and while standing in line to buy a T-shirt was a guitar player. We watched Eric like a bunch of Jedi apprentices watching Yoda! It was really kind of funny, when you think about it!

It was a great show and I'm planning on seeing him again when he comes back to the area.

Like a Steve Vai show, two thousand dudes watching Steve with their arms folded eyes glued to the fretboard.

I could never do it.

The show at the Cabot Theatre was about half/half male to female ratio. My wife actually likes his songs and had her own copy of Ah Via Musicom when I met her. I think there were a lot of people there who appreciated his music, not just gear nerds.

The mix at the show I attended definitely had a lot more guys. My wife was with me and she enjoyed it. But, I never saw anyone just sitting with arms crossed! We were all pretty excited. I stayed on the edge of my seat the whole time and watched everything! I only pulled out my phone occasionally to take some pics or a few video segments.

Toward the end of show, one dude in the audience yelled out, "We're not worthy!" That was kind of funny. The audience laughed and Eric just chuckled and smiled bashfully!

I really enjoyed that this show was rather simple in format. From the standpoint of production, this was sort of the antithesis of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra show I saw a few months ago. The TSO show was dripping with incredible production and technology. I really enjoyed that, too. The Eric Johnson concert was far simpler. But, it was equally as entertaining just to watch really, really good musicians put together some good music.
