Tube vs Solid State

I just finished a rehearsal with some tube goodness!....yes...I own both tube, and solid state...
SS for cleans/bass(hi-fi style) is good to my tastes...
BUT.....where grit/break-up comes in to play...tubes for me...mostly...my Kustom amps do well on bass with a light break-up.
Fuzz sits better on a tube amp, in my opinion, too....OK on the right SS...but better on tube...

What did you say Don YOUUUR breaaaaking UUUUUP. :D

Now before ya guys fry me in oil.
I have not tried to dial in a great tone on the gritty channel in over 3 years, and when I did , I used an SD1, this is the amp on its own, and if I had to use it and not my tube amps feeding it, I could probably get the grit a bit better.
Cheers

I'm gonna be honest...the only "Orange: I think I would want is this:

But even with that I think I'd want it in its natural form...

Those are some of the most brutal-sounding amps I have heard.

I have wanted a Matamp ever since visiting Lex Lurid of ETSG fame way back when. I played through the three Matamps he had, and the Trainwreck (yah, I want one of those too) clone he had. Talk about sweet clean power out of sick EL34 power stages. Absolutely beautiful sounding amps. They are great amps, and I wish they were more readily available here. Personally I think the doom guys aren't using them correctly, but that's my opinion. I'd be using them more like Wishbone Ash did back in the day.

It's true that some tube amps require more maintenance than others, but that's not really always true. Some are notorious for being somewhat unreliable, and others are famous for being more or less bulletproof.
Reliability aside, tube amps definitely react differently to all the minor inflections, nuances, dynamic changes, and so forth... When you play a guitar through a tube amp, you're also playing the amp, not just the guitar. Maybe your ears can perceive the difference, maybe not. My ears can and do, but I can also feel the difference. And let's just be honest: nobody is throwing amps of any kind down any stairs anywhere, unless your name is Glenn Fricker and you're doing a segment about how bad Line 6 amps are lol (funny enough, I just tossed a 15W Line 6 Spider III in the junk pile out back, waiting for the big spring cleaning purge when I'll make a trip to the landfill. Seriously, I hated that thing.)

Now, that all being said, there are some really good SS amps out there, and they sound great, to the listener. The listener may not hear the difference, but the guy playing the amp can sure as :poo: tell the difference lol....and maybe he doesn't care.

Just play what you got, and have fun doing it.
