Picking Dynamics and sound of pick striking string through amp.

They suck to use....straight up...but I learned a lot from them about grip, and how much to dig in, from these wretched creations. Purely, a training tool...not for pleasure at all...they were a gimmick to teach speed picking, but they opened my eyes to how much pick angle/grip affect my playing. I didn’t learn :poo: about speed from them.

Stylus Picks...good luck finding these horrid things....but I do appreciate how much I learned from my failure with them....
edit: if I had a clue as to where one of mine was, I’d mail it to you....but I think I set fire to mine.

I've got a set of those. I think you can still get them...

They ARE a PITA, but they will teach you pick hand technique whether you want it to or not.

I think I may have a couple left. If OP wants, provided I can locate them, I'll send him one to try.

I saw that, but was shy about posting a $17 pick set(with teaching materials though).

Yeah, they're not cheap or anything. I've bought exactly one set lol

But, it helps if you view it as a training tool, rather than just 3 picks. I would not recommend using them for regular playing at all. I don't like the tone, and they'll just piss you off when you want to dig in a bit....but for building and maintaining muscle memory of "proper" technique, I found them to be useful to a degree. (looking at you, Marty Friedman...lol...WTF is "proper", anyway?) I don't really shred much either, but they immediately made it known that any bad habits I may have developed were NOT going to fly lol

I’ve gotta say, that’s probably a much less stressful path.
I can not seem to really adapt to a righty drum kit.
Most of the things that I do adapt to as a righty, I find the adaptation process a stressful thing.
Sometimes it seems worth it...sometimes it just seems to be a necessity....but it doesn’t feel “correct”.
I am happy with my fretboard hand though...

man what a month jan 2020..with all this cool threads on dynamics..technique & all the recording everybody has done..we really are the anti gear site in a way...this group just brings it..and i swear at times its the only glue keeping me together cause of our band situation

challenged myself to 31/31 in Jan...did 31 random lessons off youtube..just clicked guitar lesson..didn;t care what came up..dumb stuff..hard stuff...i wrote out the lesson in a notebook for memory & reference...am not the same player as in Dec. Got very interseted in guitars for what needed to be done. Lp & SG player..just how it is,,so clearing out everything that isnt amazing playing. & going to stop pretending & get real again

...the JB video on how to set that LP..is exactly what i was working on..but had way too many guitars in the mix..distraction....keeping 2 shredders..Kramer & Washburn..others gone already..and real crazy while i was reevaluating..i am Peavey ValveKing 2 amp player..it is my thing..not popular oppinion or internet cred...its what works for me...last Dec i got so lost..was on a roll recording at home & i let 1 comment on a gear site derail me...guy said i suck & my songs suck.....i had a reply ready, didnt think, "Sip" was that bad of song....but..i took myself to the woodshed & kicked my own azz...hard....was trying to speed run...tap....all kinda stuff that has no soul...i like making music..it will never be liked by many or get gear site honors..lol..(but an out of tune tele playing other peoples music into a SS amp will have em in a circle jerk on a certain site}...but it comes from the heart...i know deep down inside if J wasn't hurt..we would be playing all over the place.....

my thoughts...not ready..even tho been there a few times...there must be something real special around the corner..must practice more & learn to write better...not what gear sites want..but what plays on people playlist & packs shows...

I dunno about that....I, magically, have a rack full of bass guitars that I didn’t have at this time last year...400% more basses than were on hand last year...and amps, a couple of those too...never mind the recording gear inventory increase...
That reminds me, I’ve gotta get off my a$$, and do another thread.... :) :cheers::dood:

i meant more like..we actually use our stuff...record it & help one another more so...oh we still still doing our share of keeping the economy afloat !! lol
 
Thanks for the replies guys, I dont know how I missed them but just stumbled back onto my thread.
A lot of good info in it.

I do some picking / fret hand coordination drills in my warm ups but have added a 3 minute drill I got from one of Steve STine's videos.
Down picking just the low e and focusing on relaxing and minimizing wasted motion. Focusing on how the pick is striking at different angles and varying attack. I also work on palm mute dynamics here as well.
3 minutes is a long time.
I use Google stopwatch and a metronome while doing it as well.
I dont always do the same drill with alternate picking but do that one pretty often.

Been doing this almost everyday for about 6 weeks.
Overall, I have noticed some definite improvement.

There's really no replacement or shortcuts through practice, is there?
But when we stick with it, it eventually falls into place. Just have to not give up.
 
I think that "bite" that you get from the pick is one of those guitar noises that can be really appealing at times. For example, you hear it all over Tony Iommi's playing and it's just part of his style and identifiable sonic signature. Plenty of other guys too. It can be annoying when you are playing alone but in a band context it can add a little pinch of flavor to the sauce IMO.
 
this guys pick attack is IMHO like BB Kings....a SIGNATURE of his tone really ---
