...how long should I let it burn? Should I remove the pickguard or leave it on so there is a nice burn outline?
Is this a trick question?
Or are you seriously thinking about setting a guitar on fire?
And if you are, please, PLEASE, assure us all it has nothing to do with Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher or Tony Iommi's guitars.
I will treat it as a serious question.
Don't do that.
Fire is a very tricky thing to work with.
If you want a scorched looking strat body, use a heat gun.
With the heat gun you will have much more control of the entire process.
.....I don't think a heat gun will leave a natural burn pattern.
That depends on the heat gun.

Are you trying to accomplish something like this?...how long should I let it burn? Should I remove the pickguard or leave it on so there is a nice burn outline?
Rory's guitar was so beaten up because it was stolen and left outside in a ditch for a period of time. The elements did that and not fire.
So...yes it's a Hendrix thing...my curiosity is getting the better of me.
I don't think a heat gun will leave a natural burn pattern.
No! No! Hendrix was a stoned idiot. Don't ruin a guitar like that Chris!!!
Maybe stoned but not an idiot. Jimi Hendrix was a humble man that was also living and playing in the moment, and opening doors for any guitar god thereafter. No! No! Hendrix was a stoned idiot. Don't ruin a guitar like that Chris!!!
Good luck with the project!
Y'all know I dont dig the relic thing but the burnt highlights could be cool.
wonder if that retains a burnt smell?
do you coat that with an oil finish after?
Sometimes I want to make a big bonfire of all my gear, but thats a different story.
