Marshall VS265 Valvestate Service Questions:

yep..it was all Mojotone had in stock after a student accidentally put a foot through it...thankfully missing the speakers!!!!!!

That would suck. Many years ago (like, high school) I had a Peavey cabinet that someone managed to put a cymbal stand through and it took out one of the speakers. It was an interesting cabinet - same size and dimensions as a 4x12 but it only had 2x12's, both at the top, with a big port at the bottom. Sounded great and moved a lot of air.

Good point you make about air movement..I have found that that is a big part of my sound, probably from years of running an absolute overkill 2203 head and 1960 cabinets...

Check out my soundclip just posted to the "hot Rodding a DSL40C' thread!!!!

The only downside is the weight and size of the VS265...I gotta pick it up and turn it flat to get it in my trunk...guess I better start eating Wheaties again????

I almost never use my 4x12 cab any more because its so damn big and heavy. For the stuff I used to use it for I bought a Mesa Recto 1x12. It's exactly 1/4 of the full-size Recto cab in dimensions and internal volume, and it sounds for all the world just like the full-size, but obviously less air moving and less volume/projection. Has the same Mesa/Celestion V30 speaker as the full size cab

For when I want the cab to "breathe" a bit more I have a Mesa Lonestar open back with a C-90 speaker in it. To be honest, I prefer that cab for most things, even high gain. It just sounds so much bigger than it is and I really think I like the response of the C-90 over the V-30.

Smaller is better. I can't even get a 2x12 cabinet in my Mustang. That cabinet you describe sounds devine!

This is the little Recto one:

This is the Lonestar:

Really, they are both so good it's hard to have a favorite.

The Recto has all the punch of a 4x12 and at high volume the whole thing seems to pulse in just the right way. I prefer it for any application where things are going to be really loud, and it's the go-to for playing with the band/gigs. The V-30 needs to be pushed a bit to come to life but when it finally wakes up its jaw-dropping with high gain.

The Lonestar sounds great at any volume and being an open back it seems much bigger than it is. The C-90 is really articulate and is EQ'd with a big bold bottom end, It just doesn't hold together quite as well at real high volume and the speaker starts to compress more that the V-30 in the Recto, but It's a better cab for close-miking.

I wish I could find the in stock - around here - to try out.

I actually think you'd have to go to the Mesa Boogie store in Hollywood to plug into one and try it out. They stopped selling through Guitar Center a while back because the salespeople were not knowledgeable enough. They are very, very selective about their dealers. If you have the time to drive all the way there it's worth it, not just for the experience of the Mesa store but for all the other music shops right there on Sunset Blvd.
