This is a good idea.
I did it one time on a plain solid color repaint to jazz it up a bit.
I considered using a piece of small cardboard tube to hold a razor blade, then making a cardboard stop that would only allow cleaning of an area equal to the width of the binding...

Nitro base coat. They just don't put the gloss nitro top coat on them. So you do have to be careful if you are planning to spray nitro on top of that - the wet nitro will dissolve the paint already on the guitar, so you basically have to strip the top to do it right.
