Well here in Canada Its celebration week in Edmonton Alberta, Getting things started off for the 106th Grey Cup. Edmonton is the host this years events, unfortunately the Eskimos did not make the cut, and my team the Hamilton TigerCats lost out in the Eastern division final last weekend. But the celebration continues throughout Canada for all those CFL fans . I will be cheering on the Calgary Stamps. Not sure if Blackie is a fan, but the Ottawa Team is around the area where he is from. I know their are some American fans of the CFL, not sure if any on this forum. Anyway I am getting geared up for tomorrows kickoff, and as they say may the best Team win!!

Some of the CFL names seem a little funny like the 2 teams named after condoms (Rough Riders) (Saskatchewan & Ottawa) or the Alouettes??? what pray tell is an Alouette? --- I know it in that Canada song about french stuff----
Alouett-a JOhn 2 Allouett-ah --- john 2 plumes of ray ---- or some such thing

MORE serious and IMPORTANT question....
HOW BIG are the BEERS at the stadium -- (at least 32 oz??) and do they (please Lord tell me they do) serve poutine at the game?????

Ottawa football club formed in 1896 were called Rough Riders. In 1925 temporarily changed name to Senators. In 1930 dropped Senators and returned to Rough Riders. In 1996 Franchise folded. In 2002 CFL returned to Ottawa as the Renegades, then in 2014 Red Blacks made their first debut on July 3rd 2014. The R in red represents the past history of the Rough Riders and Red Blacks the colour of the uniforms. Some stadiums have the Great Poutine. I believe the beers are a fair size. Some more history for you, do you remember not that long ago NFL was such a boring game always defensive with hardly any long throws, They adopted the offensive game from the CFL where there is lots of throwing what I call the long bombs, much more exciting,.. oh and remember we have a larger field and we use bigger balls . Now you have had a history lesson. Thanks for asking!:)(y)

1896!?!?! so -- the condoms are named AFTER THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thank you for the History LEsson -- Im from N.E Ohio -- I am a Browns Fan --- I have to be a BRowns Fan --- its a "DNA" thing and required by law at birth yes they were a power house and won many championships --- in the 40's and 50's --- havent done CRAP since-- but hey -- ITs the Browns

I woulda though quality poutine and at LEAST 32 ounce BEERS would be required of all but the lowest end of stadiums.........interesting------- disturbing in a way -- but interesting------

OH so -- sorta like the NEW ZEALAND "ALL BLACKS" in the name thing then -- got it ;) (FYI my favorite Rugby Team --- the ALL BLACKS

Well you asked about the team name Alouettes . They are the Montreal Alouettes, they have a long History in Montreal dating back to 1850s. They were first formed in 1946. you were right about the song which is well known here and my Wife is French Canadian. It is a work song about plucking the feathers from a skylark, which had become a symbol of the Quebecois. The origin of the Teams name also comes from the 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron, The Royal Canadian Air Force's First French Canadian Squadron.:)

VERY interesting----- so the john te plume a RAY thing is PLUCKING the bird? (hey my French is mired in CREOLE and Cajun ;))

they are a CHEESE PRODUCT..........that does not sound "manly" or aggressive -- or FEAR instilling....like ......the BROWNS (cough) or the (another of my FAVORITE TEAMS) Oregon DUCKS! (FIGHTING DUCKS BABAY!@!!)

I actually HAVE an ANEHEIM MIGHTY DUCKS HOCKEY JERSEY! lol

I tend to back "losers" in case you havent noticed-------I was a BIG Saints fan for years when I lived on the gulf coast----- they sucked for decades........ poor Archie Manning -- he was so screwed on that deal..........he could gone to SUper Bowls and BEEN SOMEBODY --- Saints drug him down-- but his boys both done good -- so ...there ya go
