Which Wah?

Guys,

I am looking for your opinions. All are welcome. I am looking to purchase a relatively inexpensive wah pedal and I am looking for some thoughts and suggestions.
I have, in the past, had both the standard Crybaby and the Vox 847. At the time I preferred the Vox as it sounded warmer and less harsh to my ear.
Has anyone tried the new crop of mini wahs? Are they any good? Any information you can provide is appreciated.
 
I'm back to the wah itch inspired by Mike Schenker UFO tonz, so I am interested as well.

I would go for the VOX. That said I use a wah not much the wah's I use are not made anymore 1967 VOX and a Axis wah.
 
I have the Jim Dunlop Cry Baby pedal for years and has worked very well for me. You can get them used for around $100. I heard a lot of good things about the VOX wah wah pedal but I haven't really tried one yet. That's all I know about wah wah pedals so far.:wink:

I've tried them all and the one that has stayed is the plain jane Cry Baby Standard. Simple as Forrest Gump, indestructible as a pair of Doc Martens, but mostly it just cuts through a mix better than any of the other ones. Maybe not as refined or "warm" as some but just cuts through like ham on a deli slicer. The Fasel ones sound too honky to me, the ones with extra buttons and knobs have too much to muck up the sound, the fancy ones aren't worth the money IMO as I don't hear any improvement over the simple Standard. Oh, and they are only $80 brand new.

I'll be honest though: the best sounding wah that I ever used was a D'Armond Weeper that I had in the early 1980's. It was made like junk (stamped mystery metal) and therefore didn't last but it had the most beautiful wah sound I have ever heard, with a really broad sweep.

Your description of the Vox 847 makes me want one of those. I have a Crybaby now, and hear some of that harshness. I’ve wondered about the mini wahs, too. But decided the full-size units would provide a better sense of control over the sweep.

Completely unrelated, I notice your avatar says, “Escaped from Whitby Psych Hospital.”

That’s funny! I assume you mean that as a reference to Whitby Sanitarium, featured in Bram Stoker’s novel, Count Dracula. If you’ve escaped from it, that must mean you’re Renfield!

My mother worked at that hospital for almost 30 years as a nurse. We always called it the Whitby Nut House back in the day.:wink:

If I find a great Black Friday deal on any of the basic models from the name brands I will very likely pounce.
I dont think I will chance a used one.

I was fooling with my noisy cheapy Korg multi effect enough to convince me
"I NEED a WAH!!"

ANy thoughts on the Morley units?

I'm on the wah pedal hunt myself. I'm hoping to trade into one, but like jtcnj if BF brings a deal that can't be passed up I'll probably pounce.
 
yeah-- wawa--- they are "uptown" at 1.00 for the any size fountain drinks------ but WAY better meatball subs than the Circle K----
 
Can't do Wawa, man - gotta have boiled peanuts. There is one Circle K here locally that doesn't sell boiled peanuts. We avoid it and refer to it as the communist-circle-k. Baristas and artistas? Sounds like something a Roman soldier would use to bonk you in the head with or something...

I have a crybaby on which I tried all the commonly recommended mods to dial out that harshness & warm it up (make it more like the Vox), none of which were really successful. I found changing out the MPSA18 (Darlington) transistors for much lower hfe items to be the secret sauce. I used the types called for in the original Vox patent, 260hfe & 400hfe IIRC. To do it over I would do no other mods, just the transistor swap. Cheers

Dammit... I don't have anything that'll measure hfe's!
 
I usually roll back the pot one tooth on the gear rack on a Cry Baby, then it doesn't sound as harsh. So, Cry Baby or Vox for lower cost option.

I really like the RMC Teese Wahs that are out, and I still love the old Morleys. But neither of those are low cost.
 
I've been kind of looking at the Dunlop 535Q Cry Baby Multi-Wah. It's more than I'd want to pay, but never know, may luck out and find someone to barter with locally.
