Peavey 6505+ 112 combo

My 6534+ is in the workshop at the moment due to some noise issues, so I have borrowed this amp from my twelve year old nephew. I found it for him last year and his parents bought it for him, pretty sure it was $500, including an Eminence speaker (I think it is a Texas Heat) and a recent revalve and service. The guy was selling it because by his own account it is 'too loud' and 'too heavy' (the previous owner has a degenerative muscle disease and is confined to a wheelchair, so his wife would have to move it around for him). I think Alex is experiencing the same issues as his mother won't let him turning the post-gain up past 0.5 ... which I could barely hear! Anyway I've blown the cobwebs out of it now, been cranking it up to 7 at band practice.

It's a great little amp! Sounds close to my 6534+ but obviously you need to crank the post-gain more due to it being 60W rather than 120W. I tried it through my 412 V30 cab (disconnecting the internal speaker and switching the impedance selector from 8 ohms to 16 ohms) at band practice but after getting it home I decided the 412 is not necessary and it sounds plenty loud through the Eminence speaker in the combo. It also seems to be coping well with all of the stuff in my effects loop.

The footswitch for these is the two-button 6505 switch, but it is optional and it seems that most people didn't bother to pay the extra. The previous owner eventually got a Boss FS-6, and that came to Alex with the amp. It works well. <A> controls the channel selection and <B> controls the crunch switch. I haven't really used clean or crunch.

I can recommend this amp to other people. I don't know if there was something fixed at its first service but currently it is running great and was a bargain. I should have my amp back soon and then I'll give it back to Alex with instructions to crank it up some!

Very nice combo. As a side note, it does give me pause that you can barely hear what others think is loud. 60W us still a lot of juice. You need those ears to rock!

I've come to realize that volume level doesn't really register with me, but higher frequency response does. I can crank a humbucker quite 'loud' and its no big deal but a single coil gets 'ice picky' and shrill to me....

Listening back to it on video I am still the loudest on the video, but I think that is due to the camera placement (it was closest to me). Which makes me think that my hunch about speaker being close to floor is correct. Because Josh's cab was up higher than mine his was easier for us to hear in the room, but I came across louder on the camera

Here's some footage from band practice yesterday, I stuffed up the beginning a bit by getting a mental blank after the drama of using the FS-6 to switch the clean channel off, but I do state this a little later in a brief expletive-laced statement

I'm the one on the left playing the rhythm parts

Got my 6534+ back from the shop, my wallet now $300 lighter. Installed a new phase inverter valve, resoldered much of the main preamp board (the one with the pots, rather than the valves), and installed a custom made steel shielding plate into the amp to improve the shield/ground and reduce noise. Yet to test it myself.

I will install casters on Alex's amp before I return it

Casters done. I had a brand new set of inserts and screws laying around so I installed those; I will just get the set that Alex has and install his wheels into the ones I put into the amp. I used the well worn ones from my 412 just for test-fitting purposes. Just needed a 16mm spade bit, some smaller bits for pilot holes (and the screw holes), and an electric drill and a large phillips screwdriver. I used the holes from the original feet as my initial pilot holes

Dave,
your a very interesting guy-----

I say this based on the Dark Metal you perform --- juxtaposed by the lace doilies pink draperies and floral prints and refined furnishings of your home...

this hints a to a level of depth in character seldom experienced --- kudos to you Good Sir --- I would tell you the Peavey amp is HORRIBLE and needs sent to me -- but I could probably buy 2 here in the swamps for what the freight would cost from down under...

SO to you I SAY ROCK THE "F" ON MAN !!!!! but with a proper tea and scones of course ;)
