What Killed Rock Music ???

I think the point is new bands after 1996

Then the point is still without merit. Here's a quick grab of killer rock bands from my recent playlist that have come out since then:

Orange Goblin
Glowsun
Mastodon
Red Fang
Mothership
Queens of the Stoneage
Wo Fat
Earthless
Freedom Hawk
House of Broken Promises
The Company Band
Fireball Ministry
The Sword
Electric Wizard
Mos Generator
Isaak
Dinosaur Pile-Up
Thrice
Royal Blood
Dozer
Rival Sons
Sasquatch
The Gracious Few
Highly Suspect
Chevelle
The Winery Dogs
Black Country Communion
Black Tide
Symphony X
Shinedown
Lonely Kamel
Truckfighters
Red Stone Souls
Gozu
Red Giant
The Shrine
Iron & Wine
Svolk
The Fire Theft
Giant Drag
Slow Burn
Mammoth Mammoth
Black Stone Cherry
Astroqueen
Andromeda
Circus Maximus
Ponamero Sundown
Elder
Trampled by Turtles
Seemless
A Perfect Circle
Karma to Burn
Pelican
Black Label Society

This is by no means comprehensive or definitive. Just music I have listened to myself within the last 2 weeks by great rock bands/musicians that proves the premise of the video wrong. And obviously I am not including older bands like Dream Theater or Rush that continue(d) to create new music that was/is relevant.

Just because someone stops caring about music and closes their mind to new sounds doesn't mean great music isn't being made every single day, and tying greatness to blues is a ridiculous conceit (I for one am very glad that most of the music in this list has no tie to the blues). The guys in the OP video sound like my father when I was growing up, lamenting the passing of "real" music like Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller...it's no different, just a closed mind in an aging dude.

I haven't heard hardly any of these!!!

Exactly, it is generational.
These crazy kids and their crazy music today, the world is going to hell in a handbasket.
Hey! Get off my lawn!!
See? Timeless and Priceless

"The star is new but the play is the same,
as it was so long ago"

There is a lot out there; my son has a handle on a lot of it.
You just dont hear about it in the mainstream.

I know very few of those names as well.
I stopped evolving for a bit over 20 years focusing on being a father, husband, and provider.
Now I'm trying to catch up.
Still, I need my fix of what I know and enjoy, and end up back at home with my Beatles and my Stones, (All the young dudes, carry the newwwewws...)
Somewhat metaphoric, but see what I mean?

I haven’t heard them, either.

But, the name “Trampled by Turtles” is a really cool name!

So, @gball , what song would you recommend by TbT, as sort of a representative sampling?

haha, that's funny you zero'd on that one - I was copying and pasting quickly and grabbed that by accident. Not exactly rock music...I listen to a lot of Bluegrass along with the rock.

Check em out:

My tastes in music are certainly not confined to rock!

Bluegrass and bluegrass-ish music works, too.

I’ll give it a listen as soon as I get a chance.

I grew up being forced to listen to and perform country music. I earned my first paycheck, in Mom's country band, being paid as a BMI recording artist in 1978 at the age of 14. Rock-N-Roll (modern for the time) was "The Devil's Music" and was forbidden at home. I kept a Walkman and box of cassette tapes hidden the loft of the barn. I still like some traditional - real- country music from the old days, but largely I hate ANY music that doesn't rock. There are classic songs from the 1970's and 1980's that - to this day - I have never heard all the way through because either the first few measures of the music bored me to death, or i found the singer's voice repulsive/annoying.

In 2003, I was offered the lead guitar spot in Yoakham's band and flat turned it down because I have no desire to play music that I don't absolutely love, regardless of how much money may or may not be involved.

I won't own or play an acoustic guitar. I just don't put any effort into things I don't love, so music is really easy for me... :)

Watching the video was interesting. I don't think rock music has been killed, but the idea of the "rock star" might be. There are no modern rock stars just really good rock musicians. A band like Rush would never get signed today for several reasons-

1- They sound too unique. Does a record label dare take a chance on something unproven?
2- Record labels (if they even exist anymore) don't give out large contracts any more so the artist is not able to have the financial backing to evolve quickly. The differences between Rush's first album and 2112 are huge! They sound similar, you can tell it's the same band, but there is a sense of growth from one to the other.

We don't seem to have that type of encouraged growth and longevity from music today. It's like labels don't trust good musicians to make good music.

Alrighty, just listened to this song...

Okay...that’s a cool tune, right there!

“You know I wouldn’t fight, if these guys wouldn’t shove me.”

That is a great line!

@eSGEe , you gotta listen to this song!
