To What Are Yee Listenin' Right Now?

I remember when I was a kid watching the USA network before it got big and was kind of a cult classic type channel. That video used to play every once in a while - I've told people about for years and they'd look at me like I was nuts. So, it came up again and I posted it here. See, it exists ;)

Okay...WHY have I never listened to this guy before?

I’ve got some catching up to do.

I guess I’m gonna be binge-watching Eric Johnson videos this weekend!

Good tune Witty Smitty...I bet you can play that on your over-quacked Stratocaster guitar with a whammy bar.;)

You flatter me, Black Attack!

No, I can’t play that. I’ve never even heard it before.

And, I’m actually trying to dial back the quack.

I noticed you have an obsession with the pick up heights on your Strat. It's a good thing that the heights of the pick ups on a Strat are easily adjustable. My method is to press the high E string on the 22nd fret and measure at 1/16" from the pole pieces on the pick ups. I measure 1/8" on the low bottom "E" string and then I adjust according to volume when I have the guitar plugged into an amplifier. How do you do yours?

REALLY come on now, WHEN I was a kid we had cable TV just to get 5 channels. Broadcast channels from Balti/DC area

Cable - you must have been rich ;)
We did the whole bunny ears thing, spinning the dial thing to get it to tune in good enough to see here. But, we were only about 10 miles or so from the local broadcasting I guess. The USA network used to play the Jamaican Sun splash stuff, Andy Worhol, and other oddball stuff too...

I don’t measure anything. First, I set the pickups pretty low. Because the pole pieces of a Strat pickup are actually magnets, unlike the steel pole pieces in a humbucker or a P-90, they exert a stronger pull on the strings. If a Strat’s pickups are too high, they can affect intonation, especially on the low E string. I had this happen to my Strat when the pickups were too high. So, I pretty much get things set up before I start raising the pickups.

Once I have everything else setup I start raising the bridge pickup until the sounds starts to thicken up how I want it, but I pay attention to intonation and possible oscillations. If the intonation starts to suffer or I get oscillations, I back it down. Also, I’ve noticed that you can get kind of a spikiness if the pickup is too high, so I listen both clean and distorted. Then I raise the middle and neck pickups until the sounds starts to fill out on each one, but I keep checking the bridge to try to balance the volume level out. I also check intonation frequently throughout the process.

Most importantly, I pay attention to how the guitar sounds on chords, both clean and distorted. If the pickups are too high, the chords can sound muddled, so I may back things down to get good articulation with chords.

When I’m all done, the sound may actually be weaker than you’d get by having the pickups higher. But, I feel the sound is more rounded and smoother. So, I make the amp do the heavy lifting and crank the amp a little more and and make some EQ adjustments. To me, it’s more important to feed the amp a clear signal than a loud signal. You can always add dirt. You can’t add clean.

My method probably isn’t for everyone, but I feel I’m getting more usefulness from the guitar.

Oh, I also use a wound third string. That makes a big difference.

I've really been enjoying the Necromancers' Servants of the Salem Girl cd lately. I love their sound. They'll be touring Germany in November when I'm there, but I don't think I'll be able to catch them. I'd really like to see them live.

But seriously: When I was a kid there was ONE tv and radio channel in Norway. It was the state channel, and private broadcasting was illegal. Private broadcasting started in 1923 but was banned in 1933 when the national broadcasting company, NRK, was founded. It wasn't until December 16. 1981 that private radio and tv channels became legal. Still, it wasn't until the late 1980s that private channels became relatively common here. These days things are different, naturally. At the last count I think I had 165 channels on cable. Of course they are almost all complete fæces, and I still mostly watch the old state channel (which these days is actually four different tv channels and umpteen on digital radio)...

We got basic cable when I was a young teen, it was common and cheap as we were 50+ miles from either NYC or Philly broadcast.
In the sticks pine barrens towns in central Jersey right along the toll road Garden State Parkway- hoardes of people moved south for cheaper housing and commuted north.

The rich kids had HBO, and Boobies!!
Honk! Honk! - The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox, Mother, Jugs (ahhh Rachel, where is Chili?), and Speed,
and A Clockwork Orange are some of the first films I remember seeing with no commercials, on TV, and with some nudity!!
Good times for a growing boy who has recently discovered - the Orgasm.
