Looky what I gots on da way...

I hope it will happen on the Western Electric. Ten years of hype on the Genalex Golden Lion that was a joke New Sensor.

Yes, it was a joke. I bought a GZ34 after reading internet reports that they were worthwhile. Yeah right, what a waste of money. No longer lasting than any other new production GZ34, which aint long. After going through a few new production types (longest lasting about 5 months), I just sprang for a true NOS/NIB (rebranded) 7 notch f32 Mullard GZ34. Should have just bought one in the first place. Cheers

Ivan next time try the JJ/Telefunken GZ-34 I have had good luck so far 64 quads of 6L6GC and 26 quads of EL-34 and 12 GZ-34

Thanks plexi. All I've tried of the JJ's are pre amp tubes, ECC83's, ECC803S etc, though I know a fair few people using JJ power tubes, EL34's, E34L's, 6L6's & liking them. Hopefully I wont need another GZ34 now. Cheers

I'm not real well versed on tubes. I've only used the TAD7025WA's, JJECC83-MG's, Genelex Gold Lion T12AX7's, JJ5751's, Genelex KT88's and plain old Electro-Harmonix EL-34's.

The Gold Lion T12AX7 has the most gain to my ear.

JJECC83-MG has more gain than a stock ECC83 but less than the Genelex Gold Lion

TAD7025WA sounds about the same to me as a regular ECC83

JJ5751 is warmer and fuller, more organic sounding gain with a less "fizzy" gain signature

The KT88's didn't sound much different to me but people tell me they produce a fatter tone???

I find that NOS tubes make the biggest difference in the pre amp. Luckily I only have 3 amps to find tubes for. Both 50 Watters have a 60's green text Sylvania 12AX7 in the phase inverter & the rest of the pre's are a mix of Brimar CV4004 (nice tube) & 60's red text Sylvania's. The "added triode" amp has a JAN GE 5751 in position 1. I have an RCA on the way for the pre of my 5F1 champ build, which should arrive today or tomorrow & was expensive. The big name ECC83/12AX7's like Mullard, Telefunken, RCA etc are getting way expensive. Luckily, NOS usually last & I'm hoping the ones I'm using do for a good while yet. Cheers

1968 Marshall Super Lead 100 Brimar CV-4004 x 3 and GEC KT-77 x 4

Retubing the power amp would take some searching, the GEC KT-77's are getting scarce. I can imagine it sounds phenomenal though, tight & powerful.
The RCA turned up yesterday, in a post package that would fit 2 stompboxes in it
WP_20180815_002.jpg 4/69 date marked on box. What a difference these tubes make in any Fender type amp. Nothing else gives that clean, clear, chimey top end that these are known for. Worth the cost. Cheers
Edit; I only buy tubes through trusted vendors, never through ebay & the likes. I pay the extra for thorough testing to make sure they meet specs.
The package it arrived in. WP_20180816_001.jpg
Cheers

My American made Fender Hot Rod Deluxe likes Telenfunken power tubes. The real German made tubes. The preamp tubes don't seem to matter. I have two sets, one set for work, 12AX7 in all three places. The volume is uncontrollable with a 12AX7 in V1 and goes from not much to a stadium volume level. I put a 12AT7 in V1 and V3 the V2 is cool with a12AU7. This thing is clean and takes a lot to break up. To help it out I use different pedals and a Treble Boost.

Try a 5751 in the V1 position, I think you'll really like the result. Tubes have a very forgiving nature, so a 12AT7 will work where the circuit calls for a 12AX7, its just that the supporting circuitry isn't optimized for the AT7. I think of it as akin to fitting a bigger double pumper 4 barrel carb to your old V8 & not rejetting to suit. It'll run, just not optimally. A 5751 IS a 12AX7, it just has an amplification factor of 70 instead of 100, so its a "lower gain" 12AX7 & will perform properly where a 12AX7 is called for. Also great as a phase inverter where your looking not to drive the power amp so hard. The 5751 was originally designed as a rugged, low noise, lower gain 12AX7 for avionics applications. Cheers

I will try a 5751 in the V1 spot. I thank you as I am always looking for better ideas. Fender makes a model that does come with a 12AT7 in the V1 position, it is a signature model for a jazz player and the last name is Benson. Ibanez also makes a guitar model with his name on it. So in away Fender is approving this mod. I read that the 12AT7 is 70 % and the 12AX7 is 100% just like you said. I need to order stuff in the morning and I will include a 5751 in my order. Thanks again Ivan.

5751 gives very mild, organic gain....
