PCB In Gibsons:

Hmmm....well, I never noticed a transient spike, but my playing is very disciplined, most likely from so much unplugged practice. I had an engineer comment once, as he was viewing the spectragraphic analysis of one of my tracks, that it looked like I was playing with a compressor.

I run volume and tone full-up all the time. It's very rare for me to turn the guitar down because it loses presence and gain.

I am sure 50's wiring is all well and good, but unless you are turning the tone down, the capacitors are not doing anything.

The variations in capacitance may create some different tones, but again, if you dime-out the pots, as I always do, then it makes no difference.

In the Hotel California video I posted, I think the tone is worth examining...

The guitar is dimed-out, the gain on the DSL40C is 1/2, Bass is 8, Mid is 1/2, Treble also 1/2, and Presence and Resonance is also 1/2 way up.

I never change these settings, so even if I am playing Hotel California or AC/DC, I simply change my attack which changes my tone.

I use the same amp settings for songs like "Smoke Rings In The Dark" and the tone sounds almost clean....

Clip sounds good, and more power to you!

Nothing mucks up my technique faster than playing an electric guitar unamplified...I try hard to never do it, or I lose my touch and am bashing the hell out of the guitar.
But...I am also a slave to my vol and tone knobs - I fiddle with them a lot and I am almost never (actually, probably never) on 10 on the volumes. I find the tone too shrill and uncontrollable.

I hate PCB's...they get in our ground water and cause cancer and $hit...not to mention rashes and....

...oh wait...never mind....

Guitar PCB's are not for me either...

I'm a bit disappointed I have to go though this on a brand new Gibson.....but, the tuning stability and intonation alone is reason enough for me to keep the SG...

Funny, I get dissapointed if there is nothing to change so I can make it an original. Luckily this almost never happens to me!

Ok....

So, the Gibson tech I spoke with believes the pickups are the culprit, but he is 55 miles away and booked for several weeks.

So, since I already have the GFS Classic II PAF's, I suppose I could get a pair of the correct Moldex connectors (I think Biddy identified them in an earlier post) and add them to the unsoldered end of the GFS Kwik Plug harness and just try them out without any modification.

Alternately, I could salp a set of 57 Classics in there with the PCB connectors, but I think I should rule out a circuit board issue first...

Raiyn,

So the ground is used on the tailpiece stud on the SG too?????

Well Gents, this one is definitely getting real wiring and covered PAF's. In the interim, I still practice with it at low volumes, where it doesn't buzz and squeal. Here is a short clip of last night's rehearsal....just a little bit of the Hotel California solo, played through a DSL40C with no effects other than delay...

Honest opinion,

Who feels like this tone is a little thin for a Gibson with 490's?????
