PGK Tele Kit Build Thread

Same question as above, single pup setup?
Yes, Fender Esquire style. Don't know the exact details about early Fender Esquires, but I read somewhere where Fender still routed these types of Teles for the neck pickup, but covered it up with the pickguard... just in case the customer wanted to add a neck pickup. I definitely did not want a route for the neck pup. I was hoping for some nice wood grain patterns, and wanted the option to maybe not have a pickguard on the guitar at all. A clear pickguard is possible, too.

Whoa i just noticed thats a Esquire type body. Bonus points for that.
:woohoo:

Ooh, nice choice. A naked tele :D

I am glad you did not say purple. You may have one if you like, as a token of my affection. No charge.

Warning - the holes are for import pots - they will have to be drilled out for USA pots

Very generous Ray, reminds me to thank you again for helping me out with a pair of humbucker height adjust screws and a pair of strap buttons on one of my AXL husk builds!
Thank you again!

I love both of those guitars and play them regularly.

How would any of you approach this:

Since I need to drill the holes at the heel of the neck, should I just clamp the neck to the body and mark the holes?

Or, temporarily install the hardware needed to string up the guitar, then lightly clamp the neck, string up with just the two E strings, check alignment, apply more clamping pressure, and then mark the holes?

And... does anybody have a decent tip on how to roll the fretboard edges?

I thought that the Esquire didn't have a truss rod? They are cool guitars but I play the neck pick up most of the time. The bridge on my rose wood Tele was not even connected most of its life. I did a pick up change and now it is running for that twang and snap thing. It is a great guitar but a crap Tele. The Quarter Pound pick ups in my Sea puke green along with a great neck and body connection has the stuff to make it a good one.
Good luck with your build!

The early days of the Esquire and then the Broadcaster Leo Fender used pickups from slide guitars.
The angel of those slide pickups went with them to his guitars.
I bought a couple old slide guitars years ago and put them in a couple Tele guitars. They are a great choice if you can find old slide pickups. The modern slides have a P90 style pick up. Now I wish I had a real slide pickup for my slide guitar.

I put the neck in the pocket. Make sure it all the way back and use the holes in the body to drill the holes. I have a drill chart or you can find the correct drill size for a number #8 screw. What they send is a sheet metal screw and not the proper wood screws. The wood screws have a wider thread.
I have used both but with the sheet metal screw the treads it cuts strip easy if you change necks.
