ZVex Box of Rock

ThatZVex looks fantastico maximo - how does it sound???

I really hate that brand, and especially that pedal - cheap for a reason... I had that pedal and half a dozen more from the same company; meh...
I think the Dark Matter is the only TC Electronics product I have had but it just didn't do it for me.

Tried out the "Box of Rock" last night and must say that it sounds good. I had limited time with it but found that, to me, it sounded best when I had the Boost engaged all the time. I am looking forward to a time when the house is empty and I can really let 'er fly as I find that these pedals sound much better with higher volume. That certainly was the case with the Marshall Jackhammer I had as well as the Tech 21 British.

I like the Box Of Rock, have had one for years. Nice British tone, lots of body, and a handy boost when you want it. Big sound in a small box.
IMO what this one really needs is a trim control for the bass; its lows can be just a bit soggy at volume.
That's into a blackface type channel, might be quite different into something else.

So far, the Marvel Drive is my favorite MIAB. Closest I've found to the wild, hairy chime of a 70s non-master volume Marshall.
Perfect mid voicing. No tone control, only a Presence knob. You adjust the overall character by balancing the two volume controls.
For me, it nails the bark, and the bite, and most importantly, the feel.

Marvel Drive is very touch-responsive and gives really excellent volume-knob interaction. It has four separate stages of gain.
The Blackstone OD is a four-stage drive too, and exhibits similarly great dynamic qualities.

I am not sure WHY --- I have NO logical explanation -- for why I dont like these....I want to -- perhaps my many many many (MANY!)parlays down the modeling amp rabbit hole have tainted my vision?
Perhaps I see "profiling" as just another marketing gimmick?
"modeling"
"profiling"
"Voicing"
is it all just mental masturbation?

Ive had many "modeling amps" -- (have 1 now actually) --and I have spent many hours --- "dialing in" a Dumble....or a vintage Marshall -- or (insert $$$$$ amp name here) --- to my liking but I am left wondering -- (since Ive never rubbed junk on a Dumble-- or a 68 Princeton-- or a REAL tweed Champ --etc etc.) does it REALLY sound like that ???

I HAVE -- compared a MODEL (of a VOX AC 30 ) to a VOX ac4 with gain boost-- that was marketed as a "bargain" ac 30 tone machine ............the "model" sounded BETTER than the ACTUAL VOX--Ive compared MArshall models with actuall Marshall DSL15 and Valvestates--
I ve comparied other "name models" to amps I had on hand that were close or same brand etc.....
My MESA (oooh ahh MESA-- boutique USA $$ amps--Sysco is touching himself ;) --) --- well TBTH it sounds "good" -- but sounds BETTER (by my ear) run through a cheap ass old PEavey speaker than it does through its own "black shaddow" emminence (begging the question WHY SPEND ALL THAT COIN to have to use a cabinet to get it to sound GREAT???) just get a 50.00 PEavey .............

NOW-- if any one of you (really only 1 can fit with the dogs-- and even then --- you might not want to) where to be in the same room here with me-- hearing the SAME thing I hear-- would you agree ??? Dunno .......

If I was THERE in Sp8ctre or Rays place and listening to the Kemper in "real time" -- in "the room" --I might ......just find it the best bit of KIT EVER! -- or I might think ....yeah thats nice ...HOW MUCH WAS IT??? ---

Some hear Pavarotti and weep ---- others go "whats that fat bastard screaming about?" -- the notes he is singing are TECHNICALLY the same-- but heard very differently -----

if a tree falls in the forest -- or a 10,000 watt stereo system MODELS a tree falling in the forest -- does the deer still run -----

IS it Friday yet?>
ugh
