also where is this guy at? we can send a forum member to kick his A$$ ..(I mean convince him to like your work--lol) .....you know if it gets you the win ;)

the old Louisville Slugger sales approach ;) ;)

He would be in Germany. Ok so Rythym guitar is done...and so is about 90% of the lead guitars (yes plural). Keeping it in the vein of melodic death metal and then i was reminded of Metalocalypse where the two guitarists had a rivalry going sometimes. So for the solos i panned them differently and tried to imitate a guitar duel. theres one section where i have to (well not HAVE to...want to) do a second bout of guitar solos but after that.... onto the bass...

On the topic of Black metal: the concept is kinda cool i guess in the sense its all about rebellion and i eat that stuff up. But like you said: the lo-fi production, wet cardboard sounding drums and guitars pegged out on treble and gain to the point its like nails on a chalkboard, never got me lol the drumming is definitely technical if only theyd record it better, but ive read they actually SEEK OUT the worst mics they can find and have even used PC mics and headphones plugged into the mic input to get the worst sound. Kinda self defeating to me, but to each their own i guess.

But good luck with this dude's challenge: go hand him his ass lol

I find the whole black metal culture interesting in the same way some of my ex girlfriends found murder documentaries interesting...in fact...they sometimes go hand in hand, one of the many reasons why i tend to stay away from it and a lot of those guys take themselves WAY too seriously.

As far as the recording goes...yea, thats why im considering what i do in the vein of death metal. I'm using my typical amp settings that i use on all my songs, same drum VST as what was in my last song. I can't bring myself to go back to sounding like im recording through a baked potato.

do you now any cab sim plugins that can work with pro tools first?

Not right off hand no, i use reaper and i use an outdated line6 guitar port (i think its about 10 years old or so) and the amp sims on that. even though they renamed them due to legal reasons, a bit of research shows that im basically using the sims of a hot rodded Marshall JDM 800 head through a Mesa Boogie 4x12...

Why did i go with that combo? Hell if I know, just works :)

Day 3 of my Death Metal project.
With the Rhythm guitars complete, i can now focus on the bass. Luckily nothing other worldly has inadvertently been summoned into this realm thus far, although i couldn't help but notice every time i recorded the guitars it inexplicably started to rain...heavily... Coincidence I'm sure and nothing to be overly concerned about.

I don't plan on doing anything too fancy with the bass, just bringing in the bottom end to marry the guitars to the drums. Although i can't help to feel as that will be a challenge in and of itself, my only saving grace being that I don't double track bass. So baby steps. After that I can finish out the lead guitars in one small section to make it feel complete and if all goes well, tomorrow i'll be working on the orchestra and maybe even finish out this project. We shall see.

So now the bass and lead guitar parts are done! Surprisingly the bass wasn’t all that difficult, what drove me crazy was the leads. Mainly because as I said before, I’m trying to simulate dueling leads in this song. So I’m having to approach the lead playing in two different ways while still linking the two together melodically... not easy but I think I did a pretty decent job at it. The song isn’t due til the 14th and all that’s left is the orchestra bits, so I can definitely take my time if need be but I’m hoping that it will all just come to me and I’ll have this song knocked out tomorrow. Then I’ll run it through y’all before I submit it.
