Who thinks a Six String Bass looks like a Battleship...

Do you think a 6 string bass looks like a battleship?

Me, I'm very happy with four strings.

I've done a recording project where we actually needed a low D
or at least the studio guy thought so. I was going to move on without
it, but he retuned the low E string on the Studio P-Bass and supplied the
note. I was amused, and impressed, but soon forgot about it.

It doesn't weigh on my mind much. I seem to be able to do what I need to do
with four strings. I have a lot of respect for my fellow bassists who own and play
a five or six string behemoth, and I watch them sit down to play. *grins
I also watch them lug the darn things in and out of venues... and it makes me
appreciate the simplicity of my ex-Squier P-Bass.

So let's vote on it.

I cant figure out 4 half the time........6 string bass--- is like a short guy owning one of these isnt?

I never even bought a 5 string bass.

I played a guy's 6 string bass - once. It felt like a 2x4 rather than a bass neck.

4 strings are enough for me on a bass, thank you.

5 strings I can go, if the neck is narrow enough (mine is ok, although easy for the G string to slip off the fretboard) but 6-string is definitely out for me. You can make lovely music on a 6-string, almost like a bass and guitar in one, but too many strings! I might try a 5-string strung EADGC one day, but then I'd need another because I'm not sacrificing my super tasy super low notes and ease of fretboard access.

Kernel says: Good answer! There's Battleships and there's Battleships, just like the diversity among instruments.
Some of them are quite funny-looking, unless you are on the receiving end of a salvo. All the guys who get seasick
have to do their duty in those tall towers that rock and roll so much.

I can't speak for the truck owners, but I would think you need some pretty big/long/strong fingers to play a six string bass. Lot of property to cover that wide neck.

I did look around for a handsome bass to post. That one's spectacular. I only tried one once, belongs
to a friend who I respect highly as a musician. I found the darn thing practically unplayable... even though
his was an excellent instrument, lovely and toneful. If I practiced with it, I'm sure I could learn my way around.

But I'm so comfortable with four that I just don't see the need. Fred's bass seemed heavy to me, which
is saying a lot. But I just went looking on Sweetwater and found that Ibanez makes a six string bass that only
weighs about 7 3/4 pounds (3.5 Kilos). That's the one I'd try to work out on, if I ever got motivated.

Hard to see because of the poor video quality, but it looks like John Paul Jones is playing a 10-string bass here (second song, not the one you can see on the thumbnail). Probably best not to arm-wrestle him.

5 string for me because it says fender bass not fender midrange... i'm not into the 6th string {high C} because i'm not a frustrated wannabe lead guitarist... when my son was still home he had a 6 string so i got to stumble around one... whatever floats your boat...

My apologies to John Paul. That's a 12-string bass. Good grief!

I built ship models as a kid and also served in the Navy...I'm also a military historian.

The first ship is either the Bismarck or the Tirpitz. The superstructure and funnel is a dead giveaway.

Ship #2 is clearly a Japanese Fuso class battleship

#3 is a British Renown class cruiser

Below is U.S.S. Mississippi is a British Admiral Class battleship, most likely the HMS Hood.

And at the very bottom, a Maine class battleship, most likely the U.S.S. Maine, but since three were built in that class, it could also be the Missouri (not the later Iowa class BB-63) or the Ohio.
