I'm guessing that Dr Funk is a Brit. I read a reference that he plays in the "Newquay" area. Googled "Newquay", and it shows it's on the southeast coast of England.

Drop D on bass is very cool. My band plays a song with two chords Em7/D and D. I let the bass string tuned to D drone through the whole song. It is hypnotic.
