What's Your Favorite Amp?

It was in excellent condition cosmetically when I got it, but being from 1965, it needed some caps changed and a grounded power cable. And the dreaded tone sucking cap/resistor thing taken out. It was extremely bright when I got it. I still have to turn down the tone controls on the guitar to get the tone right. A couple of the guys at my local music store are really good amp techs, so they swapped some caps for different values to give it some more bass and less of an ear piercing top. That, combined with the speaker changer really made the amp a killer. The only downside to it al is that it has made me really want one of those old GA20s or GA40s from the late 1950s...

It is a tricky thing this love of ours for older gear, it usually turns into a never ending rabbit hole we fall into.

It's so hard to pick a favorite amp, I like them all.
I'd have to say my little Mesa Rectoverb 25 is my new favorite, as I haven't found tone I like better.
My Mesa F30 is an outstanding tone generator as well.
I like my Ampeg VH140C for the killer facemelting grind and harmonic laden and chimey overdrive. It's also one of the amps that I've had the longest at around 20 years.
I like my Marshalls (4 of them) for the Marshallness that they exude.
I like my Boss Katana, for being a light, cheap and easy to shlep about combo with ample power, decent tone and a 12" speaker.
My tiny little Roland Micro Cube is a great grab & go for weekends away, as it's small, toneful and can run on batteries or AC power.
The new to my stable Bogner Alchemist is starting to impress me with its power and full sound.
Plenty of tone locked up in there, it just needs the right settings to be coaxed out.

I suppose the one I like the least is a VHT Special 6. Not that it's a bad amp, just not my cup of tea.
But it's Champ like simplicity, ability to take many flavors of tube swappage, and mod friendly tag board make it a favorite of many folks, just not me. It will be sold or traded in the near future.

Had the same feeling about a Dr.Z Carmen Ghia that I had. Killer good wide open tone, but the lack of reverb and what I consider overdrive just made it a one trick pony for me. The good news was it sold in a day.

I'd still like to get my hands on a Dr.Z Maz 18 with reverb though.

I have really been drooling over the Rectoverb 25 lately. The Subway Reverb is sweet, BUT . . . I would like having tone controls for each channel.

I don't think I even know what my favorite amp is!

I will say, my favorite of the ones I have is my Marshall DSL-5C. I also really like my '73 Champ.

My other two amps, a Marshall Class 5 and a modified Vox AC4TV will likely get sold off to help finance a Mesa Rectoverb 25 (or whatever amp I decide to get. I reserve the right to change my mind suddenly and without warning!).

Ok damnit heres another person talking about a Rectoverb 25. This is not help me one little bit to control my urges.

Yes, and yes. There's a nice little output strip on the back for you to choose your output.
Hey! That's a pretty nice way to select the impedance. I've never seen that before.

So, like I said before... Your 2 x 15 ohm speakers are wired in parallel, but judging by your last pic, your tapping into the 16 ohm tap instead of the 8 ohm tap. Is the mismatch on purpose?

That was the photo I took before I removed the old wiring harness, and two 8 Ohm speakers.

I like to have a record of if I ever want to switch back.

My favorite amp continues to be my Dark Terror. Try changing all preamp valves to 5751's and you see how much more manageable the gain control can be.
I recently changed the PI valve to a balanced 5751, too.

The one I just built. Push pull 6v6, 12ax7 preamp, 12ax7 long tail inverter, and basically tweaked to mine and the Frerengi's liking ;)
No pics.
The wife took the cell phone that the Ferengi gave me to take pictures with - lol...

My all time favorite was my DR 103 with the two 2X12 cabinets.
My Blackface Fender Bassman head was a very close second.
I don't have either one anymore because I have no brain.

:fan: REALLY?

For me I love but have never owned a 1950's Bassman.

You can tear down the door to my ex wife's house that I paid for and grab 3 tweed Bassman's some 1964-1965 JTM-45 Marshall's the list goes on.

The court gave me 24 hours to clear out my things I did the best I could. I tried to get a restraining order and got kicked out of my house.

67,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, she is a terrible woman.

How can people essentially crush the good things in someone's life, like their feelings, joys, treasures like irreplaceable things mean so little when in reality they are the fabric and history of our lives.

She probably put them out for the trash man, huh 67.

Tony, I was going to put a DR103 as my 3rd favorite, but once again I never had one of those yet either.
I do have a nice Red Knob The Twin combo amp and would possibly like to try a Vox AC30.
