What's your all-time favorite metal album?

This (and Schenker) are as close to metal as I go.

Nothing in the world wrong with Scorpions/MSG/UFO ( all Schenker connected obviously lol)! Definitely metal by most standards and amazingly influential each.

I think the term metal is subjective anyways. To me, what IS metal?

1)Anything against the grain of popular mainstream radio
2)Something that has a harder edge somewhere in it. Could be the guitars, the bass, the drums, the vocals or certainly all of the above.
3)There is a certain attitude in it thats can be rebellious, anthemic or embracing things that are considered taboo by normal society
4)Most importantly, there can be softer approaches and acoustic parts but the core overall should be something loud, that moves you and can pick you up when you are feeling down.

To me, things beginning back to the days of Deep Purple, Cream, Led Zepppelin, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer and even Jimi Hendrix started metal as we know it. I am one of the people that associates the 70s Hard Rock bands with metal due to the same concepts and sounds as well.

Metal isnt just a distorted guitar, blast beat drummer, cookie monster vocals or what you wear: its the rebellion attitude and spirit of playing with something more powerful sounding

I've always thought of Metal as groups that I could never get close to (Iron Maiden, etc.) Your points are well taken. Never really thought of them that way. Thanks!

Yes, it is!

Yes.

I dont think Scorpions or any band like that is metal. They are rock/hard rock at best.
Some people call Status quo metal band but to me its pop music.
The bands you listed are beginnings of metal.
Scorpions definitely fit the bill as a metal band, certainly from Sails of Charon, Blackout, The Zoo and Lovedrive.

In fact, your pal Dave would agree on their status
