I came across a set of "previously enjoyed" EMGs and harness with pots and for Telecaster at a fairly reasonable price (about $80 USD) on a website for a local used ("vintage") gear boutique shop. See the picture below.Definitely interested me, but when I looked at the picture, someting just didn't click. The pots in the harness are regular passive pots. When I called to inquire, they told me they were the FT/RT set which, according to the EMG website is a set of active pickups for Tele. The told me that the wires coming from the pups have bare plain ends just like any regular passive pickup, not connected to any multipin. Looks as if the pups do not have any kind of multipin connector on the back to connect them to a regular active harness (again, according to the material I found at EMG). They're selling the set "as is".

I have no real prior experience with active pickups, so I would REALLY appreciate some help to gain a little more clarity on whether you think these are something worth pursuing (like can they be connected and used as regular passive pups even if they are active?) or, if they're just trying to cut their losses and pawn them off on some unsuspecting hipster...

Any and ALL help here will be greatly appreciated, folks!
 
Im no expert but "active" pups need "juice" .......I.E. a battery ........I see no battery

Everything I find mentions "battery cable" I dont think EMG makes a "passive" pickup do they??

whats in your pic is in fact (TMK) a set of active pups and a harness from a passive tele

EMG do make passive pickups. As eSGEe said they need power for actives and I see no battery harness.
 
Only emg i know passive one is Marty Friedman sig ones.

I have emg het set active one, they need battery to operate but gives you bad azz chug chug :)
 
so I called EMG --- they do not nor have they ever made a passive TELE pickup SET-- only a strat style and humbucker passive..... but no "matching tele passive" boxed set.
 
as a side note the young man I spoke to had NEVER HEARD OF A PEAVEY GENERATION TELE........ he googled it and is now .....having GAS...... BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH

Im actually FB friends with Alan Entwistle ( you know the guitar and pickup inventor/maker) -- check out his FB page .... very cool stuff he is doing these days!

Truer words have seldom been spoken, eSGEe. At least the kid now has a new piece of knowledge to amaze (and gloat about) his fellow coworkers. :pound-hand:

To paraphrase the "original" quote from Jack Black in School of Rock: "I believe the children are our future... Teach them well and let them learn as much as possible about the wares they're selling before they go and make jackasses of themselves when eSGEe asks them an interesting question of basic knowledge and they have no clue.....". A little hard to fit them into the verse of "the greatest love", but true, nonetheless.... HAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! LOL

Yup, that was my gut feeling. I think I'll ask him to send me some more pictures to see how the cables go into the pickup. I'm still a bit intrigued, because every active pup I've seen has NO wires coming out of them like any regular pickup without being connected to a multipin solderless connector.

A Peavey Musician 400 with the 4 x (i dont remember well if 10 or 12") black widows cab was the first piece of rock hardware I fell in love with back in... 1980ish. Still have it back in the old country. A Gibson Flying V playing through it at full distortion and volume was just... awesome!! :love: Still have it back in the old country with a few more pieces of equipment that I've yet to bring home into Canada.
