What you all do / did for a living.

I have done all kinds of things when I was young, but that was college and I was experimenting.:ROFLMAO:

Let’s see did auto repair
Computer networking
Worked switching containers at a rail yard
All short term gigs.
Finally became a chemist for pigments and coatings mainly in the printing industry made it to General Manager and now for the past year I am the VP of east coast operations for a chemical company. A job I didn’t want but after my wife’s surgery I needed the money that came with the position.

That’s pretty much a quick summary.

I was an auto mechanic working for Mercedes Benz, BMW and Maserati dealerships for the first 20 years of my working career. Then I had a midlife crisis in the 90's and turned my focus to IT tech. I went to work for a little internet start up company called EarthLink starting as a tech support representative and left 6 years later as the WebMaster. Aside from my day job I own a web development company creating web sites not unlike this one.

You must be talking about the guys that don't ever have to work again, right?
Not sure how smart I was. Didn’t start a supplemental retirement fund soon enough. While its not an insignificant total…. It in combination with SS wouldn’t be enough to live on. But add in my wife’s retirement and we’ll be okay. She started teaching full time in 92. Her last 20 being in one of the far northern burbs of Chicago. They pay better here than in Western Illinois…. But then they have to as COL is several points higher here than there. Her retirement package is decent. Add in we were broke for so many years of our 44 years together…. We’re pretty tight with our spending. Just can’t get passed the not having any for so long.

And I have considered doing something on a part time basis. Just some spending cash to spend on fun stuff like guitars and gear…. But every time I do, I get a shiver that starts with my hair and works down to my toenails and I take a nap instead.

Lol. I know how that feels for sure. Glad all is working out well, and that is what I meant by the "smart ones". It was tongue-in-cheek. :yesway:;)

You covered the plate. Peavey sticker?

Lol. Completely kidding. I have my very own 5150 head that I'm quite a fan of as well.

Farmer
Heavy equipment operater
Truck driver
Chemical applicator
Mechanic
Greenskeeper
Landscaper
Irrigation system installation
Plumber
Carpentry
Critical facilities engineer

Among other stuff, and in no particular order.

If I had to pick 3 things only, I'd say farmer, trucker, CFE, but I've been and done more things than I can even remember.

Haven't worked since busting my knee. I want to though and probably can very soon, just maybe not work that is as physically demanding as what I'm accustomed to.

I won't be donning my chaps and hooks and loading any hay trucks up anytime soon again lol

Right now, to cut a long story short, I'm 100% focused on recovering from my wreck, and the idea of getting back to work is sorta on the back burner until I'm more certain of what kinds of things I can do, and the things I can't yet do, or shouldn't yet be doing.

Also considering starting over in an entirely new direction and different career. There HAS to be a better way! Lol

You could try Astrophysics!

Actually, I'd love to. I have a deep interest in that type of stuff. Unfortunately, my area is almost exclusively farms, both crops, and server farms. Both of which I have labored extensively in lol

For me, it's not even necessarily all about the money. Yeah, it's important, but it's not my top priority. It's very much more important to me that first, I enjoy what I'm doing, and then also that I'm treated fairly and respectfully.

The last company I worked as a CFE for had me training new employees that were hired on well above my own pay rate. Wtf? You can hire a new guy that doesn't know jack about this work, you'll pay him 100k a year, I get to teach him everything he's going to need to know, and then he becomes my superior? Nah, Intercourse that. I'm out. Eat a bag of dicks. Have fun figuring out how to program your VFDs and PLCs and commision and deploy your modular datacenters, etc yourself then!

Happiness, to me, takes precedence over wealth. Money comes and goes, it's only money. But we only live once, and I don't want to spend my once being miserable over some job. There's just so many more important things in life than that, to me.
