Apologies if this is in the wrong section. I'm assuming that there are some retired folks here. I'm retiring in 8 days (I'm not counting) after 44 years with the same company. I would like to know what it felt like on your first day and/or week not punching the clock. Was it joyful relief? Was it depressing? Was it a huge culture shock? I really would like to know what's coming.

Depends, i walked out one morning of the local papermill cause i hated it.Id been there since i was 26 and had 33 years in.I couldnt do it no more .Thing was i knew i couldnt live on my pension from the mill so there was some anxiety there about that but i walked anyhow thats how much i got to hating it. Did odd jobs for about a year then got a Custodial job at my local grade school and im happier than ive ever been. Its going on 5 years at the school.Im 62. So i guess if you hated your job and have a good pension you will be glad your retiring. Its culture shock for sure. Dont just lay around and get stagnent find ya something to do.44 years same company huh. My hats off to you.

I retired in January of this year. Started working at the company in January 1977, except for a slight detour working for GE Medical Systems, it was 43 years to the day that I retired. We sold our big house and had bought a smaller one, which will be bigger after I finish the basement, so I‘ve got projects lined up for a long time into the future.
EVERYDAY IS A SATURDAY !

Thanks guys. My health was a major consideration, both physical and mental. A couple of years ago I started passing out at the drop of a hat. Long story short, something that had shown up on my EKG's for the last 20 years had reared it head. They put a pacemaker in me and haven't had a problem since. Mentally I'm just burned out from doing IT support for the past 30 years. Been working from home doing remote support since mid March. A problem that might take 30 seconds desk side can take an hour or more trying to talk someone through a fix over the phone. Fun times.

Good old IT Support...
