What is Going on with the Price of Bass Strings?

That’s right. I feel the same about guitar strings. I’m a flat wound believer. And I don’t play jazz. Buy once , cry once. Thomastik baby. Let the tone knobs do their part.
Seriously, you’re a Thomastik user? How are they? I’ve never laid hands on them, that I know of. This is not meant as a joke…my other post about them was a joke…La Bella is as nice as I have been willing to go, with no prior experience.

I've used the Thomastik Blues Sliders on my SG Original 2. I love those strings. I haven't used them in awhile. I should probably give them a try again.

Roto sound has always been the go to stings for bass, and always the most expensive.
People take the strings off and boil 'em to clean them up; it works.

I started using GHS flats on my Strats for years. To eliminate the squeak when sliding. But it was sometime before I discovered flats last forever. Unless I a/b flatwounds vs round I don’t notice the difference. I do use the tone knobs on both amps and the guitar quite a bit. I don’t expect to change them any time soon. And as I said, I don’t play jazz. I may get jazzy, but not jazz. A well known member on another site has used nothing but Thomastiks forever. And hasn’t changed strings on some guitars for 10+ years.

I first put Thomastiks on the White Falcon, then the 335. If I don’t expect to change the string, why not? They are a big leap in quality above the GHS. Something I can’t quite put my fingers on. (Pun intended.) But it is definitely tangible. A sturdiness. As to your question. I like them.

Now the 335 is in the shop for some playability issues. A neck adjustment, and some fret work, and a bone nut. So I will lose those strings. That sucks. 50$ I didn’t count on loosing. I’m a working man.

Just yesterday I noticed sets of LaBella and a Curt Magnon in the bin. They may be just as good as the Thomastiks. Pretty sure I bought these with the intention of putting these on the planks. The Strat and the LPC. Now that I think about it, I have Thomastiks on the LP Standard. I’ll put LaBellas on the LPC today (been mean to anyway.)

Will report back.

Thomastik
I lied. Thomastiks are already on both the LPC and the Standard. One more thing I can say. The tuning stability is amazing. My house is not climate controlled. I live in the mountains of West Virginia and we don’t need air conditioning. The windows are wide open 7 months of the year. The LPC was in its case for two months. When I pulled it out this month it was still in tune. This week after letting it sit for a few days while I messed with the 12 string and the Standard, it was still in tune. I’ll swear by these.

I have Thomastik-Infeld flat wounds on my Jazz Bass and my Gretsch Archtop. Expensive but with the right guitar worth it. I wouldn't use them on a solid body guitar. On the the archtop they are mellow and sweet with very little string noise on fast chord changes. On the bass, once worn in, they have a great old school 70s tone and they feel great. I think I prefer Chrome flats on the bass though. They are a little more versatile and have a similar feel.

Thank you both! I don’t hear much talk about these. I always see them when I’m shopping for bass strings…they never crossed my mind for guitar, as I have been very happy with my usual choice of guitar strings.
Bass, on the other hand, I’m always open to new things…and I have not tried every option out there.

Yeah…that’s been “the going rate” for the La Bella types for a long time…I like their “low tension” flats. Very comfortable and thump well. I do like their “white tapewound” the most for a bit of both worlds feel and sound.

I hope you don’t quit…maybe try the Fenders, or Ernie Balls? Either way, flats seem to have a much longer lifespan than roundwound.(maybe explaining the price difference) Tapewound…they’ve been long lasting for me, so far.
“ feel and sound.”
That is why I want to try flat wounds, the round wound, especially low string gives my index pain after a while. I still didn’t get flat wounds.

Lots of strings available in the $21-29 dollar range.
That's come up a little. I don't know why some sets are so expensive,
but look on this page... any of us ought to be able to find what we need
on this link below.

The most recent set I bought was Rotosound Round wound... I paid $25...

DR Black Beauties on mine, they're around £40 a set now, but I changed mine just for the sake of it a few years ago, this set will probably see me out.

I also like the D'Addario half round strings, those are about $30 for a set of 45-105s.
I used the half round strings on my fretless bass, not wanting to gouge my lovely fingerboard
with round wound.

But I like the sound of Round Wound bass strings so much better than anything...
lucky me I guess. I don't have to dig so deep. I would always change my bass strings before
an extended tour, or before a recording project. It makes a difference.

Once when we were traveling, the presenters arranged for me to borrow a bass and an amp
so that I didn't have to fly with mine. I brought along some tools and a set of round wound strings,
and did a setup job on the borrowed bass (action & intonation), and new D'Addario strings.
I also included a folding Fender guitar stand that fit in the gig bag and a decent strap,
as a way of saying thanks.

I forgot most important part , stringjoys I bought were intended for the Epiphone Embassy but the strings on it are flat wound. I wish I knew what brand they are.
I should change them but they sound good.
