What In Hades Is Wrong With Me? (AKA “New Used Bass Amp Day”)

I’ve mentioned several times that I was not planning to buy any more instruments this year…I was only going to finish assembling my Esquire-Meets-Les Paul Junior mashup partscaster…

…And then I promptly bought a Gretsch Gin Rickey acoustic-electric, a Fender Pawn Shop Greta tube amp and an MIM ‘72RI Fender Telecaster Custom…

That’s all I’m gonna buy.

I’m just gonna finish the partscaster.

I promise.

Really…

Then I stumbled upon this…Dangit…

A Fender Rumble 40 Bass Amp
40 watts (solid state)
10” neodymium speaker
18-20 lbs (depending on what you read…also, it feels lighter than that—I thought it was about 12 lbs, until I looked it up…but either way, this thing weighs less than two gallons of milk).
I paid $90.00

Let’s be real—this ain’t a great bass amp…it’s not bad, but at best, it’s good for bedroom noodling and perhaps a kid with their first bass…I haven’t had the chance to use the “line out” into a PA; that might make it more usable as a bass amp, but that remains to be seen.

But it sounds dang good for a guitar…I was very impressed. The Overdrive is very nice, with a range that goes from “take the edge off the clean” all the way up to “delightfully nasty”, especially with the master volume and gain knobs.

There’s three personality push buttons (Sybil Switches? )…
I find the “VINTAGE” setting works best for me, but the other two are very usable, too.

Settings are infinitely tweakable, but pretty straightforward and easy to find a good sound.

I love little design details, and the flat Fender logo badge, similar to the one found on the Blond and Brown Tolex amps of the early ‘60’s (like my Vibroverb reissue) is very cool.

Very cool! Little bass amps can be very fun! Diggin my little Ampeg Micro CL for several similar reasons…I like mixing it with other guitar amps.
I hope you enjoy your little Rumble thoroughly!…and the smokin deal you got on it!
Congratulations!

How does it sound with a guitar? Is that a thing? ...other than the bassman.
I have played guitar through several different bass amps, and most have sounded good. Full, rich sounds that fill the room…you just have to tweak the EQ/tone controls to makes sure it doesn’t get too boomy/muddy.

I previously owned a 1972 Fender Bassman Ten (Silverface with master volume)…it was a good bass amp but a great guitar amp…I also used it for harp/harmonica, keyboards and even as a makeshift PA system…it was my first tube amp, but I lost it in the Great Guitar and Amp Collection Mortgage Payment Massacre.

I’ve also played guitar through my daughter’s Fender Rumble 150; great bass amp, really good guitar amp...this one sounds HUGE.

This new one (Rumble 40) sounds bigger than its size—very full and rich, and I think it’ll be great for a rehearsal or maybe even a small performance venue. I have yet to try it with a harp mic, but I think I can make it work for that.
