I’ve mentioned several times that I was not planning to buy any more instruments this year…I was only going to finish assembling my Esquire-Meets-Les Paul Junior mashup partscaster…
…And then I promptly bought a Gretsch Gin Rickey acoustic-electric, a Fender Pawn Shop Greta tube amp and an MIM ‘72RI Fender Telecaster Custom…
That’s all I’m gonna buy.
I’m just gonna finish the partscaster.
I promise.
Really…
Then I stumbled upon this…Dangit…
A Fender Rumble 40 Bass Amp
40 watts (solid state)
10” neodymium speaker
18-20 lbs (depending on what you read…also, it feels lighter than that—I thought it was about 12 lbs, until I looked it up…but either way, this thing weighs less than two gallons of milk).
I paid $90.00
Let’s be real—this ain’t a great bass amp…it’s not bad, but at best, it’s good for bedroom noodling and perhaps a kid with their first bass…I haven’t had the chance to use the “line out” into a PA; that might make it more usable as a bass amp, but that remains to be seen.
But it sounds dang good for a guitar…I was very impressed. The Overdrive is very nice, with a range that goes from “take the edge off the clean” all the way up to “delightfully nasty”, especially with the master volume and gain knobs.
There’s three personality push buttons (Sybil Switches? )…
I find the “VINTAGE” setting works best for me, but the other two are very usable, too.
Settings are infinitely tweakable, but pretty straightforward and easy to find a good sound.
I love little design details, and the flat Fender logo badge, similar to the one found on the Blond and Brown Tolex amps of the early ‘60’s (like my Vibroverb reissue) is very cool.
