What Did I Nearly Have in Common with Tony Iommi?

...I almost lost the tip of my middle finger on my fretting hand!

I was using my circular saw and the board slipped, the saw kicked back and grabbed the index, middle and ring finger on my left hand!

It hurt like a bitch and the first thing I saw was a lot of blood and some cut meat through my now destroyed gloves!

After I got the glove off and soaked my hand in some alcohol I was relived to see that only the middle finger was cut. I calmly told the wife
to get some super glue, some AD ointment and some bandaging material. She was more freaked out than I was, but she didn't lose it.

The cut was to the bone, but it didn't nick it or break it. Most likely a 5 or 6 stitch job at the ER after a 6 hour wait. I just super glued it back
together and bandaged it up. The other two fingers are bruised, but fine.

I've been doing major carpentry work to include building complete houses since I was 14 and this is the first time a saw got away from me.
It was my fault for trying to split a 1x4 in half with a circular saw on the edge of a table...46 years and you get over confident I guess...

All's well that ends well!

Damn that sucks! Probably be a while before you can play again, huh?

I'm hoping a week or so. I heal really fast and I take good care when I'm injured.

I spilled an entire pot of boiling oil on my hand when I was 16. They had to remove about 70% of the skin off
my hand. The doctor thought it would take 6 months to heal, but It was almost completely healed in 2 months!

Whew, glad to hear your OK. I’m doing a lot of cutting these days and ALWAYS respect saws in motion. I was pounding 10p nails into 3/4” plywood while building the shop and it seemed like ever other nail would fly off on the second or third hit. I never wore glasses when nailing until one of those fly offs came within a few inches of my eye. I saw it coming but didn’t have time to react. I now wear glasses if pounding nails. That’s also why I bought a nail gun. It minimizes flying nails but I definitely wear glasses using it and respect it more than a saw.

Same here Don I don’t care for the eye protection so much, but did pay extra for the ones that don’t fog up.
And I have put a nail across the top of my right index finger, just above the bone, it put a peculiar bend to it, that at first I had to straighten it out with my left hand, I think it’s why I can pull off pinch harmonics so easy!
Cheers

Damn Chris, close call. Glad you are going to heal OK.

When I was about 17 or 18 I crushed my fretting-hand ring finger in a giant fire door. It nicked the tip of the bone off and pretty much flattened the whole last inch of my finger. and ended up with I think 10 stitches. It took about 6 months before I could use that finger to play guitar again and I had to relearn a lot of things. Since that finger was left slightly shorter than before and I had a scar that ran right down the middle from the nail to down the bottom I had to come up with new ways to play certain things because if I hit that scar wrong on a string it could be very painful and remained that way for decades.

Sure am glad ultimately you have a happy ending. Sounds like it should all heal up and be shredding again on no time.

But I feel your pain. Work place accident nearly 50 years ago. Crushed my middle finger and ring finger on left hand. Middle finger turned out to not be wounded too badly. Ring finger didn’t get so lucky. From the last knuckle to the finger tip the bone basically didn’t exist. Took a while To heal and tip is still misshapen, but it healed and I can still play.

Ha ha... I once tried to trim my toenails with a lawnmower. That didn't work out very well... :rolleyes2:

Count your blessings. You got away with one pal.
Glad to hear your injuries are not more serious.

I have plenty of these stories too but luckily (some with surgical repairs) no permanent damage due to any specific injury.
Some hearing loss from (I think) running a router without ear protection around 1991.
Repetitive task caused aches and pains not included; results may vary.

For many years now, I ALWAYS wear eye and most times ear protection as well on any tool slinging mission.

And think carefully about any dicey operations.
Last thing I can think of was a saw table kick back ripping large rawhide dog treats in half. Wasnt quite to the side of the blade plane far enough. Thing hit me in the gut a mostly square but slightly glancing blow.
That STINGS!!

Ouch on the cut, glad that's all it was. Super Glue, it's a wonderful thing ;)
