What a surprise…

About a week ago I decided to pull out this old 65 Harmony H22 bass I brought with me when I moved to CA in 1976. My older brother bought it in the 60s. I haven’t touched it since, but just moved it around. I don’t know bass guitars, and this just seemed so-so (look at that case pic).

Out of curiosity I searched on Reverb and holy crap (see link below) these things are going for MUCH more than I ever imaged. So I searched some reviews and even though this was budget bass in the 60’s, apparently quite a few players still like them. My view on this baby has changed greatly and now I might need a low cost bass amp and better case to get me interested in trying to learn the bass.

Somewhere along the way it lost its pick guard and that little wooden block. Found a repro PG on Reverb and got that delivered.

Mine’s in way better shape than this Reverb offering.

HEY! Ive got one of those!!!!!!!!!!
kustom clean7.jpg

I WOULD however suggest (for space and weight and well ease of function )

Fender Rumble 50
or
HARTKE B600

both provide ALL THE DOWN low you need for getting going-- great features in "lines out" and blah blah blah BOTH dead reliable (like an anchor) and can be had for CHEAP---

Nice relic there, Don...

I recently got rid of my huge/heavy Peavey TNT-130 bass amp and bought a brand new Fender Rumble 40. It was $179.00 brand new (sale) at my local Guitar Sinner.

My rationale was to find a light, portable bass amp for use in my home studio with a line out for silent recording work. In this scenario, the Rumble 40 is hard to beat.

I've used it on several recordings and it yields a sound much bigger than it looks.

If you are planning on playing outdoors in a large venue, then I don't think this would be of benefit to you, and in that case, I would seek a broader range of recommendations from others... :-)

I might checkout that Rumble you and Adrian mention. I just need something for home. I can’t see me playing bass in a band for years if I start learning soon.

They are great sounding amps loaded with features for the price---perfect for home noodling on the down low ;)

Well, but the old Kustoms above are way more cool than those new amps.

John Fogerty says he was still using his oldie, does he?
